Chapter 2 - The Crimson Trail

Maya’s foot trembled over the brake pedal as the red taillights cast an eerie glow over the motionless hand protruding from the canvas bag. Every instinct screamed at her to throw the car into reverse, speed back to the house, and demand answers from her parents. But when she glanced in the rearview mirror, the front porch was entirely empty. The living room light had been snapped off, plunging the house into absolute darkness. They were watching her from the shadows, waiting to see what she would do. Trembling, Maya shifted back into drive and crept forward, keeping her eyes locked on the dashboard navigation system. The mysterious destination pulsed on the screen: Sector 4, Old Mill Road.

She drove out of the subdivision, the neighborhood streets unnaturally quiet for a Friday night. The air conditioning hummed softly, but the cabin felt suffocating. That was when she noticed the faint, rhythmic dripping sound beneath her feet. Maya pulled her hand back from the steering wheel and held it up to the dashboard light. Her fingers were coated in a sticky, dark substance. She looked down at the floor mat. A thick, crimson pool was slowly spreading from beneath the driver’s seat, soaking into the dark carpeting. Her father hadn't just lent her a car for a late-night study session. He had handed her a rolling crime scene.

Ten minutes later, she pulled off the paved highway onto Old Mill Road, the tires crunching loudly over loose gravel. The industrial park was a graveyard of rusted corrugated steel buildings and overgrown weeds under a moonless sky. Following the GPS guidance, she rounded a sharp corner and braked hard. Parked directly in the center of the weed-choked lot was an identical sedan to the one she was driving, its hazard lights blinking in a slow, hypnotic rhythm. The driver’s side door of the abandoned vehicle stood wide open. Inside, illuminated by the flashing interior light, sat a terrified teenage boy tied securely to the steering wheel, desperately shaking his head as he mouthed a silent warning through the cracked windshield.
