Chapter 12 - The Collapse

The deafening roar of the shotgun blast shook the rotting wooden rafters of the mill, bringing down a heavy rain of dry rot, dust, and splintered timber. Detective Vance stumbled backward, blinded by the flash and choking on the thick cloud of pulverized concrete and smoke. Seizing the momentary chaos, Leo shoved Maya hard to the side, tumbling her into a pile of damp, moldering sawdust as he raised his pistol to fire at Evelyn. But before Leo could pull the trigger, the entire structural integrity of the decaying mill groaned in agonizing protest. The heavy vibrations of the blast had compromised the main support beam supporting the rusted machinery overhead.
With a horrifying metallic shriek, the massive cast-iron saw housing tilted violently to one side, snapping the rusted steel cables holding it aloft. Maya scrambled backward out of the path of the falling debris, coughing violently in the choking dust. The heavy machinery crashed through the rotted wooden flooring with a thunderous crunch, plunging straight into the swollen, raging river below and dragging a massive section of the mill’s outer wall down with it into the dark abyss. The floor beneath Leo’s feet gave way in a cascading avalanche of splintered planks and rusted iron.
Leo let out a sharp cry as the ground vanished beneath him. He lunged forward with desperate survival instinct, his fingers catching the ragged edge of a concrete foundation block hanging precariously over the rushing water below. His suppressed pistol slipped from his grip, clattering down into the dark river currents without a splash. Hanging by his fingertips, Leo looked up through the settling dust at Maya, who stood frozen on solid ground just a few feet away, her hand hovering over the revolver in her belt. Evelyn lowered the smoking shotgun, her chest heaving as she stared down at the wreckage with a blank, unreadable expression.

"Help me!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with genuine terror as the concrete block beneath his fingers began to crumble away under the relentless vibration of the collapsing structure. "Maya, don't let me fall!" Maya stared down at her half-brother, the boy whose life had been stolen by the very people who had raised her to believe she was safe. She looked back at her mother, whose cold, calculating demeanor hadn't softened by a fraction. As the final support beam snapped with a sound like a gunshot, a pair of heavy headlights cut through the fog outside the ruined doorway, and Arthur stepped out from the passenger side of a second unmarked police cruiser, holding a smoking flare in his hand.
