Chapter 3 - The Bound Witness

Maya killed the engine, plunging the dark industrial lot into absolute silence save for the ticking of the cooling metal hood. Her hands were slick with sweat as she gripped the steering wheel, staring through the windshield at the terrified boy trapped inside the abandoned vehicle. The hazard lights flashed yellow, casting long, skeletal shadows against the rusted corrugated walls of the surrounding warehouses. She knew she should call the police, but the phone in her pocket felt heavy and useless. If her father was connected to this vehicle and whatever was bleeding onto the floor mats of her own car, calling emergency services might lead straight back to her family.
Slowly, deliberately, Maya pushed open her car door. The heavy iron scent of blood hit her instantly, rising from the floorboards of her sedan and mingling with the damp, earthy smell of the industrial park. She stepped out onto the gravel, her sneakers making a sharp crunching sound that seemed deafening in the stillness. She walked toward the stranded vehicle, her breath catching in her throat with every step. As she drew closer, the boy inside began to thrash against his restraints, his eyes wide with white-hot panic. Duct tape was wrapped securely around his mouth, muffling desperate, choked sounds of warning.

Maya reached the open driver’s door and recoiled slightly at the sheer chaos inside. The dashboard was scorched, and loose wires sparked softly against the plastic console. The boy—he couldn’t have been older than seventeen—had deep purple bruises blooming across his jawline and a fresh cut over his eyebrow. Maya reached out with trembling fingers to peel the tape from his mouth, but before her fingers could touch it, a blinding beam of high-beam headlights flooded the lot. A heavy diesel engine roared to life behind her, blocking the only exit out of the industrial park, and a deep, amplified voice boomed from a loudspeaker, demanding that she step away from the car immediately.
