Chapter 7: The Safehouse Protocol

The safehouse smelled of ozone, old wool, and cheap instant coffee. It was located in the sub-basement of an abandoned government printing facility three miles outside of Alexandria, far enough from the beltway to avoid routine patrols, close enough to the river to use the drainage pipes as an emergency exit.

Elinor sat on a folding metal chair beneath a flickering fluorescent tube, a thick woolen blanket draped over her shoulders. Her shaved head felt cold in the damp air, the white scar over her eyebrow stark against her pale skin. Miller placed a steaming mug of black coffee on the metal table in front of her, but she didn't touch it. Her hands were clasped together in her lap, her knuckles white.

Julian sat in a separate corner of the room, flanked by two armed guards. He looked smaller now, stripped of his suburban comfort and his complacent lies. His dark blue pajamas were wrinkled and smeared with dust from the safehouse floor. He hadn't spoken a single word since they left the house.

"The Director is denying everything, of course," Miller said, pulling up a second metal chair and straddling it backwards. He lit a cigarette despite the flickering 'No Smoking' sign on the wall. "He claims Beatrice was acting as a rogue element, running a private extortion ring using stolen agency tech."

"And you believe him?" Elinor asked, her voice flat.

"I believe that politicians will sell their own mothers for a clean press release," Miller exhaled a thin stream of gray smoke toward the ceiling. "The Deep River leak hit the dark web twenty minutes ago. Half our stations in Berlin and Vienna are going dark as we speak. Agents are burning their papers and heading for the Treeline."

"Then why am I here, Miller?" Elinor looked him dead in the eye. "If the house is already burning down, why pull me out? Why not let Beatrice finish the job and pin the whole thing on a dead analyst?"

Miller tapped the ash into a small plastic cup on the table. "Because you’re the only one who knows the backdoor protocol to the Deep River archive. The database isn't just a list of names, Evelyn. It’s a smart contract. Every time someone tries to decrypt the raw files without the master key, a trapdoor triggers a wipe command on the agency's primary servers in Langley."

Elinor’s eyes widened slightly. "You didn't just leak the roster. You locked the vault."

"I locked the vault," Miller agreed grimly. "And you have the only physical key left that can open it without destroying the evidence we need to hang the Director and his entire committee."
