Chapter 11: The Subterranean Breach

The maintenance tunnel smelled of damp earth, rust, and decades of stagnant water. Their boots squelched against the concrete floor as they moved in single file, Miller leading with a suppressed tactical light, Elinor directly behind him, and the two operatives guarding Julian in the rear.
The beam of the flashlight cut through the thick fog rising from the drainage pipes, illuminating the crumbling brick archways overhead. This was the underside of the empire—forgotten, neglected, yet holding the structural integrity of the entire apparatus above them.
"How much further?" Miller whispered over his shoulder, his breath pluming in the cold air.
"Two hundred yards," Elinor murmured, her eyes scanning the junction boxes along the wall. "Right past the old steam valve junction, there’s a maintenance hatch that leads directly into Sub-Level Three, right beneath the server core."
They moved in silence for several minutes, the only sound being the drip of water from the ceiling and the heavy, ragged breathing of Julian behind them. Every step felt like walking through quicksand, the weight of their collective pasts pressing down on their shoulders.
When they reached the iron hatch, Elinor dropped to one knee. She pulled a small digital interface device from the pocket of the trench coat—a modified diagnostic tool she had swiped from the safehouse armory. She plugged the cable into the old analog control panel beside the hatch.
"The analog bypass is still active," Elinor whispered, her fingers flying across the touch screen with practiced speed. "They never updated the emergency egress circuits because doing so would require shutting down the primary server array for seventy-two hours."
"Which the Director would never allow," Miller said, standing guard with his weapon drawn, watching the dark tunnel behind them.

"Exactly," Elinor said.
A sharp click echoed through the pipe as the heavy iron latch released with a pneumatic sigh. The door swung outward, revealing a brightly lit, sterile corridor lined with white tiles and humming server racks. They had breached the inner sanctum.
