Chapter 12: The Heart of the Beast

Sub-Level Three was a cathedral of glass and steel. Rows upon rows of black server towers hummed with a low, bone-deep resonance, their LED status lights blinking in steady, hypnotic rhythms of green and amber. The air was ice-cold, filtered to perfection, smelling faintly of ozone and heated silicon.
Elinor stepped out of the maintenance hatch, her boots clicking sharply against the polished floor. She pulled the black vintage mobile phone from her pocket and held it up like a compass. The screen was no longer dark; it pulsed with a rapid amber light, indicating a live connection to the master network.
"We have thirty seconds before the automated intrusion counter detects the bypass," Elinor said, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Miller, cover the elevator bank. If anyone comes down from the executive suites, drop them."
Miller nodded, moving swiftly to take up a tactical position behind a structural concrete pillar near the double elevators.
Julian stood near the hatch, his arms still cuffed, his eyes wide as he looked at the sheer scale of the operation he had unwittingly helped betray. "Elinor... what are you going to do?"
"I’m going to upload the real Deep River archive," Elinor said without looking back at him. "Not the decoy. The original ledger. Every illegal operation, every off-the-books rendition, every corrupt politician who signed off on the murders of our operatives over the past decade."
"If you do that, the committee will burn the agency to the ground," Julian whispered in horror.

"The agency is already a smoking ruin, Julian," Elinor replied sharply, typing the master override sequence into the primary terminal at the center of the server bay. "We’re just turning on the floodlights so everyone can see the bodies."
Suddenly, the red emergency klaxons overhead began to spin, bathing the pristine white room in an aggressive, strobing crimson light. A computerized voice echoed coldly through the intercom: Security breach detected in Sub-Level Three. Lockdown initiated.
