Chapter 13: The Final Confrontation

The elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open with a sharp pneumatic hiss. The Director stepped out first, flanked by two armed security details in black tactical gear. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt sleeves were rolled up, his tie slightly loosened, but his posture was as rigid and unyielding as a monument.

Miller raised his weapon from behind the pillar, but before he could fire, a hail of suppression rounds forced him back into cover.

"Evelyn!" the Director’s voice boomed across the server bay, cutting through the wail of the emergency klaxons. "Stop right there! You're destroying thirty years of national security infrastructure for a petty personal grievance!"

Elinor didn't stop typing. Her fingers danced across the physical terminal keys with terrifying speed, her eyes locked on the scrolling green code on the main monitor. "You didn't build a security infrastructure, Director. You built a protection racket for traitors."

"You don't understand the chess board," the Director said, taking a slow step forward while his guards kept their rifles leveled at Miller and the operatives. "Power requires shadow. Without men like us making the hard choices in the dark, the country crumbles within a week."

"Then let it crumble," Elinor said calmly. She hit the final enter key on the console.

A sharp, high-pitched tone cut through the klaxons—a clear, sustained note that signaled the upload was complete. The screens above them flashed green, then faded to a stark, blinding white as the Deep River archive transferred simultaneously to every secure oversight terminal in the Department of Justice, the Senate Intelligence Committee, and independent journalistic networks worldwide.

The Director’s face drained of color. He lunged forward, drawing a compact sidearm from his shoulder holster, but before he could raise it, Miller stepped out from behind the pillar and fired a single, precise round into the Director’s knee.

The Director collapsed to the floor with a sharp cry of pain, his weapon clattering across the polished tile. The security guards hesitated, lowering their rifles as the emergency klaxons abruptly stopped, replaced by the heavy, echoing silence of a system reset.
