Chapter 3 - The Summons at Dawn

The morning sun cast long, cold shadows across the towering steel-and-glass skyscraper downtown, reflecting off the mirrored facade that dominated the city skyline. Julian sat on a sleek leather bench in the grand lobby of Vance Enterprises, his breathing shallow and rapid. He had spent the entire night staring at the ceiling of his cramped apartment, replaying the catastrophic mistake that had unraveled his entire life in less than ten seconds.

A security guard in a crisp navy uniform approached without a word, gesturing toward a private elevator tucked away in a wood-paneled alcove. Julian stood up, his knees trembling beneath his expensive trousers. The ride to the seventieth floor was silent and agonizingly fast, the digital display ticking upward in blur-like increments until the doors slid open with a soft chime.

Victoria was already there, sitting nervously on the edge of an ergonomic chair inside the massive, sunlit corner office. The room was breathtaking, featuring panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis below, minimalist modern art, and shelves lined with historical ledgers and framed patents. Behind a sprawling oak desk sat Arthur Vance, wearing the exact same worn brown work jacket and faded blue jeans he had worn in the boutique the day before.

“Sit down, Julian,” Arthur said without looking up from a heavy leather-bound portfolio open before him.

Julian swallowed hard, taking the seat next to Victoria. The silence in the office was deafening, broken only by the faint hum of the centralized climate control system. Arthur slowly closed the portfolio and intertwined his weathered fingers, resting them gently on the polished wood surface. He looked at Julian with an inscrutable expression, neither angry nor forgiving.

“You thought you were protecting the brand yesterday, didn’t you, Julian?” Arthur asked calmly. “You thought keeping the riffraff away from the shiny toys preserved the illusion of exclusivity.”

Julian nodded miserably, staring at his own expensive leather shoes. “Yes, Mr. Vance. I thought… I thought I was doing my job.”

“That is the tragic flaw of modern commerce,” Arthur sighed, standing up and walking slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling window. “You confuse luxury with arrogance. You mistake price tags for human value.”

Arthur turned back around, pointing a steady finger directly at Julian’s chest. “I am not going to fire you today, Julian. In fact, I am offering you an entirely different kind of promotion.”
