Chapter 12 - The Poisoned Crown

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the faint, distant hum of city traffic seventy floors below. Several senior vice presidents sat bolt upright in their leather chairs, their faces contorted in open shock and outrage. One of them slammed his hand onto the table.

“Mr. Vance, this is insane!” the executive protested, his voice shaking with indignation. “You’re talking about promoting a floor associate—a retail clerk with zero executive experience—to head our entire global retail division over vice presidents who have dedicated twenty years to this company!”

Arthur didn’t even blink. He kept his steady, unwavering gaze locked onto Julian. “Experience can be taught, gentlemen. Empathy cannot. For twenty years, this board has promoted ruthless sharks who only understand profit margins and stock portfolios, creating a toxic culture of exclusion. Look where it got us: a multi-billion-dollar brand that treats human beings like trash based on their clothing.”

Arthur turned his attention back to Julian, his voice softening just a fraction. “The position is yours if you want it, Julian. You will have full executive authority to fire corrupt managers, overhaul our customer policies, and reshape the entire brand culture from the ground up. But there is a catch.”

Julian stood motionless, his mind spinning out of control. Global Retail Director? He had started the month as a low-level salesman worried about his commission and rent. Now he was being handed the keys to an international empire.

“What’s the catch?” Julian asked, his voice steady despite the overwhelming pressure in the room.

Katherine Vance stepped forward, holding a thick legal contract bound in black leather. She laid it gently on the edge of the mahogany table near Julian’s feet.

“If you accept this position,” Katherine said, her tone razor-sharp, “you must sign an irrevocable liability clause. Every single discriminatory act, every wrongful termination, and every policy failure committed under your new leadership will fall entirely on your personal legal and financial head. If the culture doesn’t change within one year, you lose everything you own—not just your job, but your personal assets, your savings, and your future in this industry.”

A collective intake of breath swept through the boardroom. It wasn’t just a promotion; it was a poisoned crown. They were setting him up to either revolutionize the corporation or crash and burn under the crushing weight of executive accountability.

Julian looked down at the black leather contract lying on the table, then up at Arthur and Katherine, and finally across the room at Victoria, who was watching him with a mixture of terror and silent hope. He slowly reached out, his fingers brushing the cool leather binding.
