Chapter 10 - The Emergency Board Meeting

The executive boardroom on the seventieth floor of Vance Enterprises was packed to absolute capacity by seven o’clock the following morning. The long, polished mahogany table was surrounded by regional vice presidents, senior financial analysts, and corporate board members dressed in immaculate tailored suits, their low murmurs of confusion creating a restless hum in the air.
Julian stood near the double doors, wearing the worn brown work jacket over his white dress shirt and slacks. Every eye in the room was fixed on him, a mixture of open disdain, bewilderment, and silent mockery radiating from the corporate elite. Victoria sat near the front, her face pale and etched with deep anxiety as she avoided catching his eye.
At the head of the massive table sat Arthur Vance, looking every bit the ruthless patriarch, dressed once again in his simple flannel shirt. To his right sat a woman Julian had never seen before—a sharp-featured, elegant woman in her late forties with piercing green eyes and a posture of unyielding authority.
“Quiet,” Arthur commanded in a low, gravelly voice that instantly silenced the entire room.
The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Julian, sealing him inside the pressure cooker of the boardroom. Arthur didn’t look at Julian immediately; instead, he turned his gaze to the elegant woman sitting beside him, gesturing toward the stack of legal folios resting before each board member.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur began, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “For forty years, this corporation has preached excellence, luxury, and uncompromising standards. But true excellence is not measured by the price tag on a watch, nor the brand of a suit. It is measured by how we treat the weakest among us.”
A nervous murmur rippled through the board members. One of the senior vice presidents cleared his throat, adjusting his tie. “Mr. Vance, with respect, why is there a retail floor associate standing in our executive boardroom wearing a manual laborer’s jacket?”
Arthur finally turned his gaze toward Julian, a faint, cryptic smile touching the corners of his weathered mouth. “Because, gentlemen, that associate spent the last three weeks learning a lesson this entire board forgot decades ago. But that is only half the equation.”
Arthur turned to the elegant woman beside him. “Allow me to introduce Ms. Katherine Vance—my estranged daughter, and the secret majority shareholder of our entire retail and real estate division.”
Julian’s jaw dropped. The entire room went dead silent, the air rushing out of the space as the colossal weight of the revelation settled over the board members like an avalanche.
Katherine Vance stood up slowly, her green eyes sweeping across the stunned faces of the executives before locking directly onto Julian, who stood frozen in his frayed work jacket by the door.

“Good morning, Julian,” Katherine said, her voice cutting through the silence like a blade. “You’ve been wearing my father’s old jacket for the last twelve hours. Do you finally understand why he handed it to you?”
