Chapter 11 - The Daughter’s Vengeance

Julian stood frozen against the heavy oak doors, the rough canvas of the worn work jacket feeling suddenly heavy and suffocating against his shoulders. The entire boardroom held its collective breath, the high-powered executives staring at Katherine Vance as if she were a ghost returned from the dead.

Katherine walked slowly around the mahogany table, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor until she stood just a few feet away from Julian. She reached out, her manicured fingers lightly brushing the frayed lapel of the jacket her father had worn years ago.

“Ten years ago,” Katherine began, her voice dropping to a harsh, controlled whisper that carried clearly across the silent room, “I walked into that exact same boutique in this exact same jacket. I had just spent eighteen hours driving a cross-country freight truck to secure a real estate acquisition for this company. I wanted to buy a watch to celebrate my first million-dollar deal.”

She looked directly into Julian’s wide, terrified eyes.

“And do you know what the store manager told me back then, Julian? He told me to leave the premises because I was lowering the property value of the block. He threatened to call the police on a mechanic’s daughter wearing oil-stained denim.”

A heavy gasp echoed from Victoria near the front of the table. The senior vice president who had spoken earlier shrank back into his leather chair, suddenly realizing the catastrophic miscalculation of the management team they had protected for years.

“That store manager,” Katherine continued, her green eyes flashing with cold fury, “was quietly protected by this very board to avoid a public relations scandal. They swept it under the rug. But when my father walked into that same store two weeks ago wearing my old jacket—the exact jacket I wore that day—history didn't just repeat itself. It demanded justice.”

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. Every arrogant word he had spoken to Arthur on that fateful morning echoed mockingly in his memory. Sir, that watch costs more than everything you’re wearing. He had played the exact same villain in the exact same play, repeating a generational cycle of corporate arrogance without even knowing the bloodline he was insulting.

“I didn't know,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “I swear to you, I didn't know.”

“Ignorance is not an excuse for cruelty, Julian,” Katherine replied softly, stepping back to rejoin her father at the head of the table. “My father didn't send you to the soup kitchen to punish you for being arrogant. He sent you there to see the people you were trained to ignore. But now comes the true test.”

Arthur Vance leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the polished mahogany desk, his pale blue eyes boring into Julian with absolute intensity. “The retail division is currently owned by a shell corporation controlled jointly by Katherine and myself. We are restructuring the entire leadership from the top down. And we have decided to offer the position of Global Retail Director to the man standing by that door.”
