Chapter 6 - The Secret Vault

The weight of the heavy brass key felt surreal in Ethan’s palm. The afternoon shadows were beginning to lengthen across the sprawling estate, casting long, dramatic silhouettes over the ruined gazebo where the engagement party had turned into a crime scene. Police officers were now escorting Victoria and her parents into separate cruisers, their designer clothes stark against the flashing red and blue lights. Ethan barely glanced at them; his mind was entirely consumed by his mother’s revelation.

“My real father?” Ethan repeated, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. “Mom, what are you talking about? Dad raised me until the day he passed away.”

Clara shook her head slowly, a sorrowful smile touching her lips as she gazed out over the manicured lawn.

“The man who raised you loved you more than life itself, Ethan, and he protected you until his dying breath,” Clara explained, her voice steadying. “But he was not your biological father. When our estate was seized and we were forced into poverty, the man who engineered our ruin—the silent partner behind the Sterling family’s hostile takeover—wasn’t Arthur Sterling at all. It was his primary investor, a man whose blood runs through your veins.”

Ethan’s heart skipped a beat. The implications were staggering. For his entire life, he believed he was self-made, a boy from the rust belt who clawed his way to the top through sheer grit and intellect. Now, the foundation of his entire identity was shifting beneath his feet.

“Who?” Ethan demanded softly. “Who is my biological father?”

Before Clara could answer, a sharp chime echoed from the pocket of Ethan’s trousers. His secure satellite phone was vibrating—an encrypted line reserved exclusively for high-level corporate crises. Ethan hesitated, looking between his mother and the buzzing phone, before pulling it out and pressing accept.

“Carter,” Ethan answered sharply.

“Mr. Carter, you need to check the central bank archives immediately,” his chief financial officer’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and panicked. “We just received an automated alert regarding your personal trust fund. Someone with master-level administrative clearance—someone bearing your exact familial DNA signature—just initiated a complete asset freeze on your primary holding company.”

Ethan froze, his eyes widening in shock. “That’s impossible. Only I have master clearance.”

“Not anymore, sir,” the CFO replied grimly. “The system just recognized a senior priority override linked to a dormant trust established twenty-five years ago under the name of Julian Vance.”

Clara gasped aloud, her hands flying to her mouth as she heard the name. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking more fragile than she had when she first knelt in the mud of the garden.

“Julian Vance,” Ethan whispered, testing the name. He stood up abruptly, looking down at his mother with a mixture of betrayal and confusion. “Mom... do you know who Julian Vance is?”

Clara looked up at him, tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing paths down her weathered cheeks.

May you like

“He isn't just a corporate rival, Ethan,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently. “Julian Vance is your biological father. And he just initiated a hostile takeover of your entire empire.”
