Chapter 4 - The Financial Trap

The investigator’s words hung heavily in the afternoon air, cutting through the murmurs of the wealthy guests like a razor. Victoria’s face drained of what little color remained, her carefully constructed composure dissolving into outright panic. She took a panicked step backward, nearly tripping over the edge of her own designer gown.

“That’s a lie! A complete fabrication!” Victoria shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at the investigator. “He’s a disgruntled employee, Ethan! Don’t listen to him!”

Ethan slowly turned his head to look at Victoria, his eyes completely devoid of the warmth and affection he had held for her just an hour ago. The cold, analytical mind that had built a multi-billion-dollar enterprise kicked into gear. He motioned for his chief legal counsel, who had been lingering near the edge of the gazebo, to step forward.

“Check the subsidiary ledgers,” Ethan commanded quietly, though his voice carried across the entire lawn. “Verify every transaction linked to the Sterling Group.”

The legal counsel quickly flipped open a tablet, scrolling through encrypted financial documents. Within seconds, his expression darkened. He looked up, nodding grimly at Ethan.

“It’s true, Mr. Carter,” the lawyer confirmed. “Over twelve million dollars has been systematically siphoned from the overseas accounts into dummy corporations registered under shell names tied directly to Victoria’s father.”

A chorus of shocked gasps echoed among the guests. Several prominent investors who had backed the Carter-Sterling merger immediately began backing away from Victoria’s parents, who stood mortified near the buffet table. Victoria’s father dropped his champagne flute, the glass shattering in a grim echo of Ethan’s earlier action.

“You were using me,” Ethan said softly, taking a step toward Victoria. “The engagement, the wedding, the social fanfare—it was all a smoke screen to drain my assets while your family faced imminent bankruptcy.”

Victoria realized the game was entirely up. Her sophisticated mask melted away, replaced by bitter, unadulterated fury. She glared at Clara, who still stood sheltered by Ethan’s jacket.

“Yes! Of course it was!” Victoria screamed, abandoning all pretense of elegance as she stepped forward, tears of rage welling in her eyes. “You think someone from my background would ever genuinely look twice at a man who grew up sharing a single-room apartment with a cleaning lady? I played my part, Ethan! But we would have gotten away with it if this wretched old beggar hadn’t crawled out of the gutter today!”

Before Victoria could finish her sentence, a sharp slap echoed across the garden. It wasn’t Ethan who struck her; it was Victoria’s own father, his face purple with absolute fury as he realized his daughter’s arrogance had destroyed their entire empire in a single afternoon.

Victoria clutched her stinging cheek, staring at her father in betrayal. But Ethan wasn’t paying attention to the family feud unfolding before him. His attention was entirely focused on his mother, who had begun unfolding the water-damaged legal documents she had pulled from her cloth bag.

Clara looked up at her son, her eyes heavy with a secret she had carried for decades.

“She didn’t just drain your company accounts, Ethan,” Clara said, her voice trembling as she handed him a yellowed paper bearing a red government seal. “The Sterling family didn’t just take your money today... they are the ones who stole our family land twenty years ago.”
