Chapter 11 - The Voice from the Past

The audio recording crackled with static before a frail, unfamiliar voice cut through the noise, sending a cold shiver straight down Ethan’s spine. It wasn’t Victoria, and it wasn’t Arthur Sterling.

“If you’re listening to this recording,” an elderly, raspy voice whispered from the speaker, “it means the vault has been opened, and the truth of what happened twenty-five years ago can no longer be buried by the Sterling family.”

Ethan stopped walking, standing dead still amidst the chaos of firefighters shouting and federal marshals securing the perimeter. Clara and Julian noticed his sudden stillness and turned to look at him, their expressions shifting from relief to immediate concern.

“What is it, Ethan?” Julian asked, stepping closer.

Ethan held up a hand for silence, pressing the phone tighter to his ear as the recording continued.

“Arthur Sterling didn’t act alone in framing your legal father,” the voice rasped on, coughing weakly between sentences. “There was a third partner in the original buyout—someone inside the Carter family who provided the encryption keys to empty the corporate accounts before the bankruptcy even began. Someone you trust implicitly.”

The audio abruptly cut out, leaving a heavy, ringing silence in Ethan’s ears.

Clara’s face lost all color, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at her son in sheer terror. “Who... who was speaking on that recording?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently.

“The former chief accountant of the original Carter enterprise,” Ethan replied, his voice dangerously low as his mind raced through every person he had ever trusted in his inner circle. “He’s been living in witness protection overseas for two decades. My legal team just located him today.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed instantly, his protective instincts flaring up. He scanned the surrounding federal personnel, his hand resting near his concealed holster. “If there was a third partner inside the family, that means the corporate sabotage wasn’t just an outside hostile takeover. It was an inside job from the very beginning. Someone close to you right now has been feeding information to the Sterlings all along.”

Ethan thought of the endless list of corporate advisors, board members, and personal assistants he had employed over the years. But then a chilling thought crossed his mind—someone who had access not just to his corporate accounts, but to his personal life, his estate, and his engagement plans.

“Marcus,” Ethan whispered, the name dropping from his lips like lead.

“Your chief of operations?” Julian questioned sharply. “The man who helped you organize this very engagement party?”

Ethan nodded grimly, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone once more to check the GPS tracking log for Marcus’s corporate vehicle. The screen displayed a blinking red dot moving at high speed along the interstate highway leading away from the city—heading straight toward the central bank where the primary trust funds were housed.

“He didn’t attend the party today,” Ethan realized aloud, the pieces falling into a terrifying alignment. “He claimed he was reviewing international contracts in New York. But he was actually positioning himself to execute the final phase of the Sterling family takeover while Victoria distracted me at the estate.”

Clara reached out, grabbing Ethan’s arm with desperate strength. “You can’t go after him alone, Ethan. It’s too dangerous. Let the marshals handle it.”

Ethan looked down at his mother, seeing the lingering trauma of a lifetime spent running from shadows and betrayal. He gently covered her hand with his own, shaking his head.

“No, Mom,” Ethan said firmly. “This ends tonight. My way.”

He turned to the federal marshal who was supervising the fire cleanup. “Marshal, I need a secure vehicle and immediate clearance to intercept a high-priority suspect heading toward the central bank downtown.”

The marshal looked at Ethan’s intense, unyielding expression, nodded sharply, and pointed toward an unmarked tactical SUV idling near the edge of the road.

“Get in,” the marshal said. “We’ll provide backup, but you take the wheel.”
