Chapter 12 - The Race Against Time

The tactical SUV tore down the darkened interstate, its tires hissing against the wet asphalt as rain began to fall in heavy, driving sheets. Inside the cabin, the dashboard glowed with the relentless pulsing of the GPS tracker, showing the blinking red dot of Marcus’s vehicle maintaining a dangerous lead as it navigated the downtown city streets.

Ethan gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes locked on the road ahead. In the passenger seat, Julian sat in stony silence, his fingers flying across a ruggedized laptop as he hacked directly into the central bank’s security mainframe.

“He’s using your old master override code, Ethan,” Julian warned, his voice tight with concentration. “The one your legal father registered twenty-five years ago. Marcus must have stolen the physical encryption key from the safe in your office weeks ago.”

“How did he even know the code existed?” Ethan demanded, navigating a sharp turn that made the SUV’s tires squeal against the wet pavement. “Only family members and legacy trustees were supposed to have access to that key.”

Julian paused for a fraction of a second, his fingers halting over the keyboard. He looked sideways at Ethan, the interior illumination casting harsh shadows across his face.

“Because Marcus isn’t just an employee, Ethan,” Julian said quietly. “He’s Arthur Sterling’s estranged nephew. He changed his last name legally ten years ago to infiltrate your corporation.”

The revelation hit Ethan like a physical blow. For years, Marcus had been his most trusted advisor, the man who stood beside him through every major corporate acquisition, smiling and shaking his hand while systematically preparing the ground for his ultimate destruction.

“He played a long game,” Ethan murmured, his voice laced with cold fury. “Just like the Sterlings.”

Up ahead, the gleaming glass tower of the central bank loomed against the stormy Manhattan skyline. A solitary black sedan was parked illegally right in front of the revolving glass doors, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically through the sheets of rain.

Ethan slammed on the brakes, sending the SUV into a controlled slide that brought it to a halt directly blocking the sedan’s exit path. He killed the engine and threw open his door before the vehicle had even fully settled.

“Stay back,” Ethan warned Julian, pulling his jacket closed as he stepped out into the freezing rain.

Julian didn't listen; he stepped out of the passenger side with his firearm drawn, taking cover behind the armored door of the SUV.

Ethan sprinted across the wet pavement toward the revolving doors of the bank. The glass was shattered, the security console inside sparking and smoking from a forced override. Marcus had already breached the inner sanctum.

Ethan drew his breath, stepped through the broken glass into the dark, echoing lobby, and paused as a voice echoed down from the grand marble staircase above him.

“You’re too late, Carter,” Marcus’s voice rang out, cold and mocking. “The transfer is already processing. By morning, your entire empire will belong to the Sterling Foundation.”
