Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

Back in the city, Arthur Sterling paced the Persian rug of his penthouse office, the panoramic view of the glittering skyline offering him no comfort. The phone in his hand felt like a block of ice. He had tried calling Viktor’s cell phone seven times in the last hour, and each call had gone straight to voicemail. For a professional enforcer, missing a check-in window was an unforgivable sin; going completely dark meant something catastrophic had occurred.

Sterling stopped pacing and turned to face his chief legal counsel, a slick, nervous man named Harrington who was frantically adjusting his tie.

"Find me someone who knows where Viktor was last seen," Sterling commanded, his voice tight with controlled fury. "And get in touch with Deputy Mayor Vance. If Clara’s audit leaks to the feds, we’re all looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

Harrington swallowed hard, his glasses sliding down the bridge of his sweaty nose. "Mr. Sterling, we’ve already checked the municipal servers. The encrypted backups Clara created... they’ve been wiped from the local cloud. Whoever intercepted Viktor didn't just rescue the woman; they executed a clean, military-grade data extraction."

Sterling’s sharp features twisted into a mask of rage. He slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk, rattling the crystal decanter resting upon it. "Who has that kind of capability outside of federal intelligence? Find out who owns the property at 412 Elm Street. Someone tipped them off."

"We tried, sir," Harrington whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "The property deed was transferred three weeks ago to an anonymous holding company registered in Delaware. No physical address, no public phone number. But... there was one interesting detail in the metadata of the deleted files."

"Spit it out, Harrington!"

"The digital signature on the extraction protocol matched a cold-case file from ten years ago," Harrington said, stepping back instinctively. "A signature belonging to Julian Vance."

Sterling froze. The name hung in the air like the scent of approaching ozone before a thunderstorm. He knew the legend of Julian Vance—a ghost in the corporate underworld, a former federal investigator who had walked away from the Bureau after a tragic bombing took his family, dedicating his considerable talents to destroying corrupt syndicates from the inside out. Sterling had thought Vance was merely a ghost story told by nervous executives over late-night drinks. Now, the ghost had walked right into his living room.

"Get our security teams doubled around every property we own," Sterling ordered, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If Julian Vance wants a war, we’ll give him one."
