Chapter 3: The Safehouse Blueprint

The safehouse was located twenty miles north of the city, hidden behind a thick stand of pine trees and an unassuming rusted gate that read Private Property: No Trespassing. It was an old stone lodge, fortified with modern security shutters, encrypted communication relays, and a medical bay equipped to handle trauma care far away from prying hospital registries. Dr. Samuel Vance—Julian’s estranged older brother—stood by the stainless steel examination table, carefully checking Clara’s neurological responses with a penlight.
Clara stirred on the gurney, her eyelids fluttering open as the harsh fluorescent light struck her pupils. A quiet gasp escaped her lips, and her hand immediately went to her throat where the bruising was already turning a deep shade of indigo. "Lily?" she whispered, her voice cracking with panic as she tried to sit up. "Where is my daughter? What happened to the house?"
"She’s safe, Clara," Julian said, stepping out from the shadows near the doorway where he had been quietly observing. He held a paper cup of warm water, extending it toward her with gentle care. "Drink this slowly. You suffered a concussion, and your ribs are bruised, but Dr. Vance says there is no internal bleeding. You’re going to make a full recovery."
Clara accepted the cup with trembling fingers, her dark hair falling across her face as she looked around the sterile, unfamiliar room. "Who are you people? The men who broke in... they said I shouldn't have looked at the files. They said my audit of the municipal transit expansion fund would stay buried."
"They were wrong," Samuel interjected, stepping away from the monitors to adjust his wire-rimmed glasses. Samuel possessed the same sharp facial features as his brother, but his demeanor was softer, shaped by decades of emergency room medicine. "Julian brought you here because the local authorities are compromised. Every file you compiled on those offshore accounts has already been downloaded to our secure servers. You did the right thing, Clara, but courage in this city comes with a very heavy price tag."

Clara took a sip of the water, the coolness soothing her dry throat. Her thoughts immediately drifted back to the living room floor, to the sound of Viktor’s heavy boots smashing through the door, and to Lily’s terrified screams. "And Lily? Where is she right now? I need to hold her."
"She’s in the adjoining room," Julian replied, his voice softening. "My associate, Elena, is giving her some hot chocolate and a fresh set of clothes. She’s quiet, but she’s processing everything. We need to talk about your next steps, Clara. Once you walked into that office with those financial records, your old life ended. From this moment on, you and Lily are ghosts."
