Chapter 5: The First Crack

The afternoon sun beat down on the glass facade of the St. Maur, casting long shadows across the lobby. Elena Vance sat in her private office, staring at the blank screen of her computer. The rhythmic clicking of her high heels against the hardwood floor betrayed her mounting anxiety. She knew the audit was moving too fast. Marcus was missing from his usual post, and the silence from the conference room down the hall felt ominous.
A sharp knock broke her concentration. Without waiting for a response, the door swung open. Clara stood in the doorway, holding a single manila folder. Her expression was neutral, but the weight of her presence filled the room instantly.
"Close the door, Elena," Clara said, walking in and taking a seat uninvited across from the general manager.
Elena stiffened, her jaw clenching. "I am still the general manager of this hotel. You will accord me some professional courtesy, Ms. Sterling."
"Professional courtesy expired the moment you assaulted me in the lobby and spent the last four years systematically looting my family’s legacy," Clara replied calmly, tossing the manila folder onto the center of the desk.
Elena glanced down at the folder, her eyes widening slightly as she recognized the logo of the Swiss holding account printed on the top visible document. She reached out to push it away, but her hand froze inches from the paper.
"Art theft, corporate fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and falsification of trust documents," Clara listed the charges evenly, ticking them off one by one with her fingers. "The local police jurisdiction has already received preliminary copies of these files. By five o'clock this evening, the district attorney’s office will have the complete digital archive."
Elena’s face lost all its remaining color, leaving her skin looking chalky and aged under the recessed lighting. "You don't understand how things work," she choked out, her voice cracking for the first time. "People like us... we protect our own. Your grandfather understood that reputation is everything. If you arrest me, you destroy the St. Maur's name in the press. The stock will plummet. Investors will pull out."
"My grandfather built this name on honesty, not deception," Clara said, leaning forward. "The St. Maur will survive a scandal because the truth is self-cleaning. You, however, will not."

"There has to be an arrangement we can make," Elena pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. She leaned across the desk, her manicured hands trembling as she clasped them together. "A quiet resignation. A medical leave of absence. Anything that spares us both the public spectacle."
Clara stood up, smoothing the front of her white button-down shirt. "You didn't offer my grandfather a quiet exit when you tried to erase his history, and you didn't offer me any courtesy when you shoved me to the floor. Pack your things, Elena. The police are on their way."
