Chapter 2: The Audit Begins

The silence in the St. Maur lobby following Clara’s revelation was broken only by the distant hum of the elevator shafts. Elena Vance stared at the heavy metal cardstock in Clara’s hand, her carefully managed facade cracking at the edges. The gold embossing on the identification badge bore the seal of the Sterling Global Trust—the absolute majority shareholder of every square foot of the hotel, including the land it stood upon.
"This is a forgery," Elena whispered, though the conviction had drained from her tone. She looked around for support, but the gathered guests had discreetly dispersed, sensing an impending corporate earthquake. The concierge who had been summoned earlier hovered nervously near the mahogany front desk, unsure whether to approach his general manager or the young woman in the white button-down shirt.
Clara slipped the badge back into her leather bag with a deliberate click of the brass clasp. She reached up, touching the raw scratch on her right cheek where Elena’s heavy diamond ring had caught her skin during the unprovoked shove. "You can verify it through legal counsel, Mrs. Vance, or we can step into your office right now and review the operational discrepancies that have accumulated over the past three fiscal quarters," Clara said, her tone professional, devoid of personal malice, yet entirely uncompromising.
Elena straightened her shimmering gold wrap dress, attempting to reclaim her physical stature. "I have run this property for twenty years. I answer to the board of directors, not to an interloper who wanders in off the street wearing a bloodstained face."
"You answer to the primary beneficiary," Clara corrected smoothly. "And as of midnight last night, upon the probate execution of my grandfather’s estate, that is me. Clara Sterling."

Without waiting for an invitation, Clara turned and walked toward the private elevators reserved for executive management, her black pants brushing softly against the marble floor. She paused by the brass "SM" logo embedded in the carpet near the private lift, waiting to see if Elena would follow or run.
Elena swallowed hard, her manicured fingers twisting the diamond necklace at her throat. Pride warred with raw survival instinct in her eyes. With rigid dignity, she clicked her heels against the floor and followed the young woman who held her entire professional life in the palm of her hand.
