Chapter 3: Behind Closed Doors

The executive office on the penthouse level offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, bathed in the gray light of early morning. Leather-bound ledgers and mahogany furniture spoke of old wealth and stagnant ambition. Elena Vance seated herself behind her massive oak desk, her hands folded neatly to hide their slight tremor. Clara remained standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the traffic crawling far below.
"You audited the books before you arrived," Elena stated flatly, breaking the heavy silence that had settled over the room. It was not a question.
"I didn't need to audit them to know something was wrong," Clara replied, turning slowly to face the desk. "The maintenance budget for the south wing has been cut by forty percent over the past two years, yet insurance payouts for slip-and-fall incidents have doubled. Furthermore, vendor payments to Sterling-approved suppliers have been rerouted through offshore shell corporations."
Elena’s expression hardened. "The hotel operates in a competitive market, Ms. Sterling. Efficiency requires difficult choices. Your grandfather understood that grand gestures don't pay the property taxes."
"My grandfather built this hotel on the principle that trust is our only real asset," Clara countered, taking a few steps closer to the desk. "You treated me like trash because you assumed my clothes defined my net worth. That same arrogance has bled into how you manage the staff, the guests, and the finances."
"Are you firing me?" Elena asked, her voice dropping an octave. For all her bravado, the thought of losing her social standing in the city's elite circles clearly terrified her more than any financial penalty.
"Not yet," Clara said, resting her hands on the back of a leather armchair. "Firing you now would be too easy. It would allow you to play the martyr and spin a narrative of corporate hostility. I want a complete forensic audit of every ledger, contract, and personnel file under your purview. Every discrepancy will be accounted for, down to the last cent."

Elena let out a sharp breath of disbelief. "You want to humiliate me."
"I want transparency," Clara said quietly. "If your record is clean, you stay. If not, the authorities will handle it. We begin at nine o'clock this morning."
