Chapter 9

The following Monday morning, the atmosphere at Apex Capital felt entirely transformed. The usual manic energy of the trading floor and executive suites was subdued, replaced by a tense, watchful quiet as employees whispered about the sudden, unannounced departure of Julian and Thomas Vance. Rumors swirled through the corridors like wildfire, but official channels remained locked down tight under Sarah Jenkins's strict compliance protocols.
Clara stepped out of the elevators on the executive floor, wearing a sharp charcoal-grey pantsuit and her usual light blue button-down shirt. The corporate security lanyard still hung around her neck, but it no longer felt like a marker of vulnerability; it felt like a badge of hard-won sovereignty. She carried her black pouch in one hand and a fresh thermos of coffee in the other.
As she walked down the carpeted hallway toward the boardroom, junior analysts and mid-level managers paused to nod respectfully as she passed. Word had quietly leaked that Clara had single-handedly uncovered the embezzlement scheme that brought down the firm's most feared executive. The unspoken stigma surrounding her return from maternity leave evaporated overnight, replaced by a new, cautious reverence.
Inside the boardroom, Marcus Sterling was already seated at the head of the mahogany table, reviewing a thick stack of forensic audit reports compiled by Sarah Jenkins’s team. When the glass doors opened and Clara walked in, Marcus looked up immediately, standing up with a gesture of genuine respect.
"Good morning, Clara," Marcus said, gesturing to the chair directly to his right—the seat formerly occupied by Julian Vance. "Please, sit down. We have a lot of ground to cover before the board meeting begins at ten."
Clara took her seat, placing her coffee thermos and black pouch on the table. She looked around the room, noting the absence of the Vance brothers' personal effects. Their offices had been completely cleared out over the weekend by compliance personnel, their digital footprints scrubbed from the firm's servers.

"I reviewed the preliminary audit notes from Sarah," Clara began without preamble. "The Horizon Sub-Alpha account was just the tip of the iceberg. There are three other regional subsidiaries operating under similar irregularities across our European divisions."
Marcus sighed deeply, rubbing his temples with thumb and forefinger. "Sarah briefed me on the scope of the exposure. It’s extensive, but contained. The acquiring tech conglomerate's due diligence team is scheduled for final review on Wednesday. If we self-report the discrepancies and present a fully cleaned ledger before they discover it, we can salvage the merger."
