Chapter 5

The tension in the boardroom thickened to the consistency of wet cement. Every eye remained locked on Marcus Sterling, the institutional patriarch whose vote had historically swung every major decision at Apex Capital. Marcus slowly removed his glasses, folding them with deliberate slowness as he processed the enormity of the allegations laid bare before him.

"Julian," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual executive polish. "Is there an offshore subsidiary registered in the Caymans under the designation 'Horizon Sub-Alpha'?"

Julian did not blink. He maintained his posture of absolute unconcern, though the silence that followed his hesitation spoke volumes to everyone in the room. "Capital restructuring requires flexible corporate vehicles, Marcus. You know that as well as I do. It’s standard practice for tax optimization during high-value acquisitions."

"Tax optimization doesn't involve routing three million dollars through three tiers of shell companies without board notification," Clara shot back instantly. "That's not optimization, Julian. That's extraction. You were planning to collapse the subsidiary right after the merger, pocketing the surplus before the acquiring tech firm's due diligence team could trace the discrepancy."

Thomas Vance stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward against the glass wall with a sharp clatter. "This is absurd! We are sitting here listening to a hormonal employee who is clearly unhinged and sleep-deprived! Marcus, if you don't have security escort her out of this building right now, I'm calling a vote of no confidence in your chairmanship."

Marcus did not flinch at the threat. He looked at Thomas, then back to Julian, whose calm facade was beginning to show microscopic cracks under the relentless pressure. Marcus was a creature of self-preservation above all else; he had spent forty years ensuring that Apex Capital outlived its scandals. If Julian was going down, Marcus would ensure the firm distanced itself before the shockwaves hit the financial press.

"Sit down, Thomas," Marcus said coldly, his voice carrying the absolute authority of seniority. He turned his attention back to Clara, his expression softening just a fraction. "Clara. You have made grave accusations backed by documentation you claim to possess. If those files are genuine, this board has a legal obligation to review them immediately. But let us be entirely clear about the implications for your own future here."

Clara met his gaze without hesitation. "My future at Apex Capital ended the moment Julian decided my child didn't belong in this building. I'm not here to negotiate a severance package, Marcus. I'm here to ensure this firm either cleans house or burns to the ground."
