Chapter 3

Julian settled into his chair with a slow, deliberate movement, resting his manicured hands on the armrests as if he owned the very air in the room. He did not look at the baby bottle sitting on the table, nor did he acknowledge the tension that his entrance had instantly amplified. His gaze was fixed entirely on Clara, a silent challenge written in the sharp angles of his jawline and the cold indifference of his dark eyes.

"Thomas is right," Julian said, his voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. He spoke without asking for the floor, establishing his dominance over the proceedings with casual arrogance. "Clara, your emotional attachment to a domestic routine is compromising your objectivity. We are seventy-two hours away from finalizing the Horizon acquisition. The board needs a leader who can operate without distractions, not someone who drags kitchen appliances into corporate corridors."

Clara did not flinch. She placed her hands flat on the mahogany table, leaning forward just enough to project quiet authority. "Let's talk about distractions, Julian. Let's talk about the missing three million dollars from the Q2 contingency fund that your department quietly reallocated to an offshore subsidiary in the Cayman Islands. Is that the kind of uninterrupted focus you're referring to?"

The temperature in the room plummeted instantly. Thomas Vance stiffened, his smirk vanishing as if wiped away by an invisible hand. Marcus Sterling sat up straight, his eyes darting between Clara and the Vance brothers with sudden, acute alarm. Julian’s expression remained fixed, though a barely perceptible twitch near his left eye betrayed the sudden jolt of adrenaline coursing through his veins.

"That is a reckless and defamatory accusation," Thomas barked, half-rising from his chair before a subtle gesture from Julian forced him back down.

"It's not an accusation, Thomas. It's a verified ledger entry," Clara said calmly, reaching into her black pouch and withdrawing a thin manila folder. She did not open it; she merely let it rest on the table like a loaded weapon. "I didn't bring this bottle into the office today because I was confused about where I was. I brought it because I spent last night auditing the subsidiary accounts while my son slept, realizing that Apex Capital is being systematically hollowed out from the inside by the very men who claim my maternity is a liability."

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and charged with undeniable danger. Marcus Sterling looked down at the manila folder, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Julian’s hardened expression. The power dynamic in the room had shifted in a matter of seconds, transforming a routine disciplinary maneuver into a high-stakes standoff for control of the entire firm.
