Chapter 9 - The Vanishing Bundle

The digital notepad flickered as the dashcam video looped back to the beginning, playing the horrifying scene of Lily being shoved onto the concrete while the black van tore away into the darkness. Julian stared at the screen, the blood draining completely from his face. The cold, calculated composure he had maintained throughout the entire ordeal shattered instantly, replaced by a primal, blinding fury.
“Which way did they go?” Julian demanded, grabbing Agent Miller by the lapels of his tactical vest with enough force to lift the seasoned investigator off his feet.
“Route 9 North, heading toward the industrial docks!” Agent Miller gasped, struggling to break Julian’s iron grip. “All pursuit units are already deployed, but that van has military-grade signal scramblers—we lost their transponder signal three minutes ago!”
Julian released him instantly, turning on his heel and sprinting toward the secret stone alcove where the hidden lever for the subterranean tunnel was located. He threw his weight against the iron mechanism, sliding the heavy stone slab open just enough to squeeze through into the dark concrete stairwell.
“Mr. Vance! You can’t go down there alone, it’s an active crime scene!” Agent Miller shouted, drawing his sidearm and rushing forward to stop him.
“If you want my help dismantling the council, agent, you will secure the perimeter above ground and follow my coordinates!” Julian roared back into the gloom before descending into the pitch-black abyss of the railway tunnel.
The air inside the underground corridor was damp, smelling of old concrete, stagnant water, and rust. Julian pulled a tactical flashlight from the wall sconce left by the fleeing operatives and clicked it on. The sharp beam cut through the darkness, illuminating the wet steel rails stretching endlessly into the north.
He broke into a hard run, his heavy boots splashing through puddles, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He needed to find Lily. If those men had harmed his eldest daughter or taken his newborn baby, he would tear the entire Vance empire down to its very foundation to get them back.
After running for nearly a mile in the suffocating dark, the beam of his flashlight caught a small, pale figure huddled shivering beside an iron support pillar.
“Lily!” Julian cried out, his voice echoing sharply off the concrete curves of the tunnel.
The small figure jerked upward. Lily stumbled out from the shadows, her pale cardigan covered in dirt and her light blue dress torn at the hem. She threw herself directly into Julian’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably as her small hands gripped the fabric of his ruined black tuxedo.
“Daddy! They took her! They took my baby sister!” Lily wailed into his chest, her frame shaking violently.
Julian wrapped his arms tightly around his daughter, pressing his face into her hair as he fought back the burning tears threatening to spill from his own eyes. He dropped to his knees, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.
“I know, sweetheart. I know. I’m here. I’ve got you,” Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he scanned the dark tunnel around them. He noticed something clenched tightly in Lily’s small, dirt-covered fist. He gently pried her fingers open.
Resting in her palm was a small, high-tech electronic tracking fob, flashing a faint green light. It had been violently ripped from the strap of the pink blanket during the struggle.
“One of the bad men dropped it when he pushed me,” Lily sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve. “I caught it before they drove away.”

Julian took the fob, pressing the activation button on its side. A tiny holographic map flickered to life in the palm of his hand, projecting a glowing GPS coordinate hovering over an abandoned private airstrip on the outskirts of the city.
