Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Vault

The heavy oak doors of the cathedral vestry slammed shut, cutting off the chaotic murmurs of the fleeing wedding guests. Julian stood frozen by the mahogany desk, the cold metal of the silver family crest pendant still burning the palm of his hand where Lily had pressed it. The infant in the pink blanket let out a soft, whimpering sigh, breaking the suffocating tension in the room. Eleanor paced the Persian rug, her white lace wedding gown rustling angrily with every sharp pivot.

“You cannot possibly believe this absurd street theater, Julian!” Eleanor hissed, stopping to glare at the sleeping infant. “Some beggar hands your mentally unstable daughter a random baby with a counterfeit necklace, and you just halt our entire wedding? Think about our merger, Julian! Think about what the board will say when they realize your family name is tied up in a public scandal before the ink is even dry on the pre-nup!”

Julian ignored her, his eyes fixed on Lily, who sat quietly on the velvet sofa. He knelt beside his oldest daughter, his voice gentle despite the storm raging inside his chest. “Lily, sweetheart, look at me. When did you last see your mother? She told me she was taking a business trip to London three days ago.”

Lily looked down at her scuffed Mary Janes, tracing a loose thread on her light blue dress. “She didn’t go to London, Daddy. She packed our bags and drove us to a dark house near the old docks. She made me promise to hide in the closet if anyone knocked. Then, this morning, she handed me the baby, put this necklace around my neck, and told me to run straight to the church because you were the only one who could protect us from the bad men in the black cars.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, crossing her arms over her sequined bodice. “Listen to yourself, Julian! You’re interrogating a child whose mind has clearly been warped by whatever runaway scheme her mother cooked up to extort us! We need to call the authorities right now and have both of them taken to a psychiatric holding facility before the press gets a single photograph.”

Julian stood up slowly, towering over Eleanor with a gaze so dark and devoid of warmth that she instinctively took a step back. “If the authorities get involved, Eleanor, they will start asking questions about why my private security detail was completely disabled around our estate last night. Don’t think I didn’t notice the surveillance logs were wiped.”

Before Eleanor could formulate a defense, a sharp knock echoed at the heavy wooden door of the vestry. Julian gestured for silence, motioning for Lily to stay behind the sofa. He turned the heavy brass handle and pulled the door open, expecting a hotel manager or a panicked wedding planner. Instead, standing in the dim hallway was a towering man in a charcoal suit, holding a sealed manila envelope stamped with a blood-red wax seal bearing the exact same crest as the pendant in Julian’s hand.

“Mr. Vance,” the stranger said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. “The council sends their regards. You have forty-eight hours to hand over the child, or the real reason your first wife died will be broadcast across every major news network.”
