Chapter 12 - The Uninvited Reinforcement

The blinding headlights sliced through the cavernous interior of Hangar 4, illuminating dust motes and drifting rain like a constellation of glowing embers. A battered black SUV smashed through the rotting wooden side-gates of the hangar with a screech of tearing metal and shattered glass, engine roaring at maximum capacity.
Arthur staggered back from the catwalk railing, his face contorting in sudden shock as the vehicle fishtailed across the polished concrete floor before slamming to a halt directly between Julian and the private jet’s boarding ramp.
The passenger-side door flew open, and Lily hopped down onto the concrete floor, clutching her small teddy bear in one hand while pointing a heavy industrial fire extinguisher she had grabbed from the back seat at the tactical operatives blocking the jet.
“Get away from my dad!” Lily screamed, her young voice ringing with pure, unadulterated fury that momentarily paralyzed the armed men.
“Lily! Get back in the car!” Julian roared, his heart leaping into his throat as he rushed forward to shield her from the mercenaries.
Before the tactical operatives could raise their submachine guns, the driver’s side door of the SUV slammed open. Stepping out into the harsh spotlight wasn't a federal agent, but Eleanor—her white lace wedding gown completely ruined, her hair soaked with rain and mud, and a heavy-duty tactical shotgun gripped firmly in her trembling hands.
“Eleanor?” Arthur hissed from the catwalk, his expression twisting into an ugly snarl. “What is the meaning of this? You were supposed to stay at the cathedral!”
Eleanor raised the shotgun, resting the heavy barrel against the roof of the SUV, her eyes locked on her uncle with a cold, desperate malice that matched his own. “I was supposed to be your pawn, Arthur! You promised me a seat on the executive board if I helped you manufacture the paperwork to seize Julian’s assets! But you and Robert planned to eliminate me the second the merger went through!”
Arthur’s face darkened with fury. He pulled a heavy-caliber pistol from his overcoat pocket and aimed it directly down at Eleanor from the catwalk. “You ungrateful little bitch. You think a shotgun can stop a bullet from forty feet up?”
“Maybe not,” a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the shadows near the entrance of the hangar.
Suddenly, dozens of red laser dots painted the catwalk railing, illuminating Arthur from every conceivable angle. Federal SWAT operatives, led by Agent Miller, poured through the shattered side-gates behind the SUV, their assault rifles locked and loaded.
“Drop the weapon, Arthur Vance! You are completely surrounded!” Agent Miller’s voice echoed through a megaphone, bouncing off the steel roof.
Arthur froze, the pistol trembling in his hand as he looked down at the overwhelming tactical force surrounding him. The game was up. The council’s decades-long shadow empire was collapsing in real-time.

With a low curse, Arthur lowered his weapon and slowly raised his hands in the air, his eyes darting toward the open door of the private jet as his only remaining escape route vanished completely.
