Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Cathedral shattered the heavy silence with their brilliant, cold light, casting elongated shadows across rows of impeccably dressed guests. Standing at the altar in a sharp black tuxedo, Julian Vance froze as the heavy oak doors groaned open. Lily, his nine-year-old daughter, stood trembling in the threshold, her pale cardigan torn and her light blue dress stained with dust. Tears tracked through the grime on her cheeks as she clutched a squirming bundle wrapped in a frayed pink blanket against her chest.
“Daddy!” Lily sobbed, her voice cracking in the cavernous space.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He took a violent step forward, his eyes locked on the child in his daughter's arms. Before he could close the distance, Eleanor rushed forward from the edge of the altar. Her elaborate white lace wedding gown hissed against the marble floor as she grabbed Lily’s arm with manic desperation, yanking the child backward with enough force to make her stumble.
“Get them out of here!” Eleanor screamed, her voice losing its polished composure, echoing shrilly against the sacred walls.
Julian didn’t hesitate. He dashed forward, muscles corded with tension, and threw his arms out between Eleanor and the children, his chest heaving.
“Don’t you dare touch her, Eleanor!” Julian barked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that stunned the silent crowd into a collective intake of breath.
Eleanor’s face contorted with pure panic, her manicured fingers clawing at the air. “Julian, look at them! They are complete strangers trying to ruin our lives! Security, get these street rats out of our sight right now!”
“Shut up!” Julian roared, turning his back on his bride of ten minutes. He knelt before Lily, his hands trembling as he reached out to steady her shoulders. “Lily, baby, talk to me. What is happening? Whose baby is this?”
Lily sniffled, her wide brown eyes looking up at him with terrifying maturity. She unbuttoned the top of her cardigan with shaking fingers and pulled a heavy silver family crest pendant necklace from beneath her fabric. The metallic glint caught the harsh chandelier light, casting an eerie glow over the altar. Julian stared at it, his pupils dilating in sheer, unadulterated horror as he recognized the intricate, custom-forged crest belonging exclusively to the Vance family’s oldest lineage.

“It’s yours, Daddy,” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning. “And she is your other daughter. Mom left her with me before she disappeared.”
