Chapter 2 - The Sound Within

The sharp, metallic clatter of breaking glass echoed through the cool night air, instantly silencing the simmering argument on the sidewalk. Eleanor Vance snapped her head toward the brightly lit windows of number 404, her rigid posture tensing even further. For a fleeting second, the smug satisfaction of a woman proven right flickered across her features, replaced immediately by a sharp twitch of suspicion.
"You see?" Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she gestured wildly toward the house. "That is precisely what I am talking about. Chaos. Total disregard for community standards. Property values in this cul-de-sac are going to plummet because Arthur here refuses to control his unruly guests."
Arthur Sterling didn't respond to her barb. The manila folder clutched in his arms slipped an inch, his knuckles turning stark white as his gaze locked onto the shattered window on the second floor. A shadow darted across the glowing curtains, moving with a frantic, uncoordinated energy that bore no resemblance to a joyful medical school celebration.
Officer Hayes immediately abandoned his clipboard, stepping past Eleanor with practiced agility. His hand instinctively hovered over the heavy leather holster at his hip. The relaxed demeanor he had worn moments ago evaporated, replaced by the acute alertness of a first responder assessing a dynamic threat.
"Everybody stay right here," Hayes ordered, his voice carrying the effortless authority of the badge. He didn't wait for permission or compliance; he strode briskly up the manicured stone pathway, his boots crunching loudly over the decorative white gravel lining Arthur’s carefully pruned flowerbeds.
Eleanor opened her mouth to object—presumably about the trampling of Arthur's imported winter-blooming pansies—but swallowed her words when a muffled cry escaped from the open-air porch.
Arthur finally moved, dropping his defensive posture entirely. He broke into a stumbling run, rushing past the police officer and slamming his shoulder against the heavy oak front door. It swung inward with a loud groan, revealing a hallway bathed in warm yellow light that suddenly felt entirely suffocating.
"Wait, Arthur! Don't contaminate the scene!" Hayes shouted, drawing his flashlight with his left hand while keeping his right free.
Eleanor remained anchored to the curb, her dark blazer feeling suddenly restrictive against her chest. She pulled her smartphone from her pocket with trembling fingers, her mind racing through emergency protocols. But as she unlocked the screen, a chilling sight caught her eye from the illuminated window above.

A silhouette was leaning out of the shattered second-story glass. It wasn't one of the guests. It was a stranger wearing a black ski mask, frantically tossing a heavy duffel bag down onto the frozen lawn below.
