Chapter 14 - The Standoff in the Foyer

The masked operative stopped at the base of the staircase, the suppressed pistol held steady at a low, ready position. The red laser sight flickered briefly across the hardwood floor before locking directly onto Arthur Sterling's chest.
"Put the poker down, Mr. Sterling," a muffled, distorted voice spoke through the respirator. The tone was completely devoid of emotion, clinical and cold. "And slide the manila folder across the floorboards. Right now."
Arthur didn't move an inch. He braced his feet firmly against the rug, keeping the heavy iron poker raised. "I don't think so. The copies are already on their way to the federal prosecutor's office via Officer Hayes."
"Officer Hayes is currently detained outside the perimeter," the operative replied smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward into the foyer. "Communications are dead, and no one is coming to save you. Hand over the ledger, or this ends very differently for your family upstairs."
Eleanor Vance’s breath hitched. She tightened her grip on the heavy ceramic vase, her mind racing with a desperate resolve. She realized then that her signature on those fraudulent municipal documents wasn't just a political mistake—it was the anchor that had dragged this entire violence into an innocent family's home. She stepped out from the shadows beside Arthur, her posture suddenly rigid and fearless.
"Don't do it, Arthur," Eleanor said loudly, her voice ringing with unexpected authority. She raised the heavy vase high above her shoulder. "The ledger is the only leverage we have left to put these bastards behind bars."
The operative's head snapped toward Eleanor, the barrel of the suppressed pistol shifting instantly to cover her. "Mrs. Vance. You've caused enough administrative trouble for the development board tonight. Put the vase down, or your career won't be the only thing that gets permanently terminated."
"My career is already over," Eleanor answered coldly, her eyes flashing with a fierce, defiant courage. "And I'd rather go down telling the truth than spend another day covering for thieves."
Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, the front oak door behind them exploded inward with a deafening crash as heavy tactical battering rams shattered the deadbolts.
Officer Hayes, flanked by four heavily armed state troopers with night-vision goggles and assault shields, poured into the foyer like a tidal wave.
"Federal marshals! Drop your weapon! Down on the ground right now!" Hayes roared, his service weapon aimed squarely at the masked intruder.

The operative froze, caught completely off guard by the sudden federal reinforcement, and slowly lowered the pistol to the floor.
