Chapter 13 - The Second Intruder

The heavy, measured footsteps pacing across the second-floor ceiling sent a chill straight down Eleanor Vance’s spine. She stood frozen in the dim foyer of number 404, her hand instinctively gripping Arthur Sterling’s forearm for balance. The warm, festive atmosphere that had filled this home less than an hour ago felt like a distant, impossible memory.

"I thought you said the first intruder escaped through the back workshop," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant thrum of the searchlight helicopter hovering outside.

"He did," Arthur replied, his jaw clenched tight as he reached slowly into the console drawer, pulling out a heavy iron fireplace poker. "Which means this isn't the same person. There are multiple operatives inside the perimeter."

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked loudly, followed by the metallic scrape of sliding closet doors being forced open in the master suite. The intruder wasn't trying to be quiet anymore; they were systematically tearing the room apart, searching for something specific that had been left behind during the initial chaos.

"The ledger," Arthur realized aloud, his eyes widening in sudden horror. "They know I brought the folder back inside when we ran out to the driveway. They're looking for the master accounting records."

Eleanor swallowed hard, her mind racing desperately through her decades of local governance experience, searching for any protocol or emergency measure that could save them now. But municipal bylaws and HOA regulations offered no protection against armed corporate fixers in a blackout.

"We have to get out through the kitchen patio doors," Eleanor whispered urgently, pointing toward the dark hallway leading to the back of the house. "Before they finish clearing the upstairs and realize we're down here."

"No," Arthur said firmly, shaking his head. "The patio doors open directly onto an unlit deck. If they have night vision equipment—which tactical operatives typically do—we'll be walking right into their line of sight."

Suddenly, the heavy footsteps overhead stopped. Absolute silence descended upon the house. The pacing had ceased, replaced by the faint sound of a heavy door handle being tested down the hallway leading to the stairs.

They were coming down.

Arthur positioned himself squarely in front of the console table, holding the iron poker like a baseball bat, his eyes locked on the dark archway leading to the foyer. Eleanor stepped back against the wall, her hand brushing against a decorative porcelain vase on a side table. Without thinking, she grabbed the heavy ceramic piece, her knuckles turning white as she prepared to defend herself.

The shadows in the archway shifted. A tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped out of the darkness, clad in dark tactical gear with a muffled respirator covering the lower half of their face. In their right hand, they held a suppressed pistol, the barrel gleaming dully in the emergency exit light.
