Chapter 5 - The Final Clause

The accountant reached their table in silence, placing the manila envelope neatly beside the towering stack of bills and receipts. He offered Eleanor a polite, formal nod before stepping back into the shadows of the restaurant’s wood-paneled corner, blending seamlessly into the background.
Julian looked down at the envelope. His hands were shaking visibly now, the adrenaline completely gone, replaced by a profound, hollow exhaustion. He slowly reached out, his fingers brushing against the heavy cardstock of the envelope. He pulled the flap open and slid out a thin, three-page document printed on crisp white paper.
"Read page three, paragraph four," Eleanor instructed, her voice calm and authoritative, leaving no room for argument.
Julian flipped the pages frantically, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon until they locked onto the specified paragraph. As his brain processed the text, the blood drained entirely from his face. He looked up at Eleanor in absolute horror, his mouth opening slightly as if trying to form words that refused to come.
"This... this is insane," Julian stammered, the paper fluttering uselessly in his trembling grip. "You aren't just taking the company and the house. You’re assigning every single corporate debt, every unresolved lawsuit, and every pending federal tax audit directly to my personal social security number."
"It’s only fair, Julian," Eleanor replied, her expression remaining entirely serene. "You built that debt portfolio with your own signatures. I am simply returning your assets to their rightful owner. The corporate shield protects the shareholders, but once the corporation is dissolved, sole proprietorship liabilities revert back to the individual who incurred them."
Julian let out a sharp, ragged breath that sounded almost like a laugh. "The IRS will garnish every cent I ever earn for the rest of my life. I’ll spend years defending myself against fraud charges. You are throwing me to the wolves."
"Not the wolves, Julian. The federal prosecutors," Eleanor corrected him gently. "And they have already received copies of the financial ledgers detailing your offshore transfers. My legal team submitted them at two-fifteen this afternoon."
Julian froze. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. He looked around the upscale restaurant—at the warm lighting, the polite waiters, the oblivious diners enjoying their evening—and realized this place wasn't just a restaurant. It was a courtroom, a execution chamber, and a cage all wrapped into one. Eleanor had planned every single detail with terrifying precision.
"Why?" Julian whispered, a single tear finally escaping the corner of his eye, tracking down his flushed cheek. "After all these years... why destroy me so completely?"
Eleanor finally dropped her composed facade for a fraction of a second, letting a cold, bitter memory flash across her gaze. She leaned in close across the table, her voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss that only he could hear.
"Because on the night my father died in that hospital room while you were out celebrating your first embezzled million," Eleanor whispered, her eyes burning with suppressed fury, "you told the doctors to pull the plug to secure his life insurance payout early. I promised myself then that I would make you pay every single cent back—with interest."

Julian stared at her in sheer terror as she reached into her bag, pulled out a sleek silver pen, and placed it directly on top of the divorce papers.
