Chapter 10 - The Federal Mandate

The heavy doors of the black SUV swung open simultaneously. Two men in dark suits and federal windbreakers stepped out onto the pavement, their expressions entirely blank and professional. They didn't draw weapons, but their purposeful strides and authoritative posture left no doubt about their intentions.

Julian took an instinctive step backward, his back pressing firmly against the cold brick wall of the apartment building. The cardboard box containing his meager belongings sat ignored at his feet.

"Julian Vance?" the taller of the two federal agents asked, flashing an open badge under the glare of the streetlamp.

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry and constricted. He tried to project an air of calm confidence, though his voice betrayed him. "Yes. That’s me. There must be some mistake. I haven't done anything wrong, and whatever commercial disputes you're investigating have already been settled through civil bankruptcy court."

"This isn't a civil matter, Mr. Vance," the agent replied smoothly, stepping closer and pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt loop. "Federal indictment number 2024-9981. You are being charged with wire fraud, interstate identity falsification, and the intentional concealment of stolen trust assets."

Panic flared hot and sharp in Julian’s chest. He instinctively jammed his hand into his inner jacket pocket, his fingers curling around the crisp, folded deed that was supposed to be his ticket out of this nightmare. If they searched him, they would find the document, tie it to the original embezzlement scheme, and bury him under decades of federal prison time.

"You can't do this!" Julian shouted, wrenching his arm away as the agent reached for his wrist. "I demand to see my lawyer! This is an unlawful detention based on corporate hearsay!"

"Your former legal counsel is currently cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s office, Mr. Vance," the second agent said calmly, stepping in to secure his other arm with practiced efficiency. "And any documents currently in your possession are subject to immediate seizure under federal warrant."

"No! Wait!" Julian yelled, struggling against their grip as the cold metal cuffs clicked sharply around his wrists. The sudden movement caused his jacket to gap open, and the folded parchment deed slipped free from his inner pocket, fluttering down onto the dirty concrete right beside the cardboard box.

The taller agent looked down, spotting the yellowed paper resting on the pavement. He knelt slowly, picked it up with gloved fingers, and unfolded it. As his eyes scanned the handwritten property deed signed by Eleanor’s father, a faint, knowing smirk touched the corner of his mouth.

"Well, what do we have here?" the agent murmured, holding the paper up to the light. "A concealed asset transfer dating back ten years, improperly notarized and tied directly to the shell accounts we've been tracking all week."

Julian stopped struggling, his shoulders slumping in absolute defeat as the heavy reality of his situation crushed down upon him. He realized with terrifying clarity that Eleanor hadn't missed the deed at all. She had deliberately left it in the picture frame, knowing he would find it, knowing it would give him false hope, and knowing the federal agents would intercept him the exact moment he tried to use it.

The entire sequence of events—from the restaurant confrontation to the street drop-off—had been a meticulously orchestrated trap designed to force him into a fresh felony charge.

"She set me up," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with a mix of awe and sheer terror. "She planned every single step of this from the very beginning."

The agents didn't answer. They hoisted him up by his arms, guided him firmly toward the open rear door of the SUV, and slid him into the dark, secure interior. As the heavy door slammed shut, sealing him inside, Julian caught one final glimpse through the tinted window.
