Chapter 2 - Beneath the Red Ink

Julian’s gaze dropped from Eleanor’s unnerving smile to the towering stack of paper separating them. His breathing remained heavy, the adrenaline of his public outburst still burning in his veins. He tried to pull his hand back, but Eleanor’s palm remained firmly anchored over the documents, her fingers splayed across the top receipt like a seal on an ancient tomb.

"What are you playing at?" Julian muttered, his voice dropping from a shout to a harsh, gravelly whisper. The surrounding diners had mercifully returned to their meals, pretending not to notice the intense domestic drama unfolding at the corner table. "You know damn well those accounts are frozen. If the board sees these signatures, we are both ruined."

"Not both of us, Julian," Eleanor replied smoothly, her posture remaining impeccably upright. She tilted her head slightly, the warm restaurant lighting catching the metallic strands in her vibrant red hair. "Only one of us authorized the transfer of corporate assets to an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands last Tuesday night at precisely eleven-fourteen."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The raw anger in his eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization. He remembered that night vividly—the dim lights of his home office, the glow of the monitor, the desperate gamble he thought he had executed in complete secrecy. He stared at Eleanor, wondering just how much she truly knew and how long she had been watching him walk into her trap.

"You hacked the terminal," Julian accused, his voice tight, his fingers curling into tight fists inside the pockets of his black trousers. "You set this whole thing up from the very beginning."

"I merely kept the books, Julian," Eleanor said softly, lifting her hand just enough to reveal the corner of the disputed receipt. "You were the one who signed away our future to cover your gambling debts. But this restaurant bill? The one you are currently throwing a tantrum over? It isn't for the wine or the wagyu steak."

Julian frowned, leaning back slightly to regain a fraction of his personal space, though his eyes never left her face. "Then what is it for?"

"It’s the legal retainer fee for the forensic accountant I hired this morning," Eleanor said calmly, sliding a single, crisp business card across the white tablecloth toward his trembling fingers. "And he just walked through the front doors."
