Chapter 3: The Blue Envelope

Harrison’s trembling fingers slid inside the breast pocket of his gray suit, his tactile sense guided by pure dread. His fingertips brushed against the smooth, thick texture of the heavy blue envelope. The envelope felt unnaturally heavy, as if it contained the physical weight of a ruined legacy. Eleanor leaned back in her chair, her smug smile widening into a triumphant grin as she watched Harrison prepare to face his fate. She adjusted her pearl necklace, her movements practiced and dripping with haughty confidence. Across the table, Lily looked up, her tear-stained face etched with confusion and a fragile spark of hope, wondering if this envelope might somehow change the bleak trajectory of her life. Harrison pulled the envelope out, the stark blue color contrasting sharply with the somber tones of his suit. He slid his thumb under the adhesive seal, tearing it open with a deliberate, slow motion that drew the breath from everyone at the table. Inside rested three pages of dense legal typography, stamped with the official seal of the state probate court. Harrison pulled the papers out, his glasses sliding slightly down the bridge of his nose as he scanned the top paragraph. His breath caught in his throat, and the color drained rapidly from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white under the chandelier light. His mouth dropped open in absolute, unadulterated shock. The figures leaped off the page, defying every assurance Arthur and Victoria had whispered into his ear over the past six months. Harrison gripped the edges of the paper so tightly that the crisp corners began to crinkle and tear. He tried to speak, but the words stuck like dry ash in his throat, choking him from the inside out. Eleanor stopped smiling, her eyes narrowing as she sensed that something in the script had deviated from their carefully rehearsed plan. Arthur frowned, irritation flickering across his handsome features, annoyed that Harrison was showing such a dramatic, unscripted reaction to what was supposed to be a routine asset transfer. Gathering his remaining strength, Harrison forced his vocal cords to cooperate, his voice trembling violently as he read the fatal words aloud to the stunned dining room.
