Chapter 2: The Arrival of Shadows

Victoria’s entrance shifted the suffocating gravity of the dining room instantly. Her heels clicked with rhythmic precision against the polished hardwood floor, a sound that seemed to dictate the heartbeat of every person present. The two young girls beside her, dressed in matching velvet smocks, looked around wide-eyed, completely unaware of the venomous currents swirling beneath the polished surface of the family dinner. Victoria’s eyes met Eleanor’s for a brief, conspiratorial second—an unspoken acknowledgment of a victory long in the planning. Arthur lowered his wine glass, setting it down with a soft clink that echoed loudly in the quiet space. He offered Victoria a shallow, approving nod, a gesture of shared complicity that made Lily’s stomach twist in agony. Lily pushed the plate of shrimp and broccoli away, her appetite entirely vanished, replaced by a cold, numbing dread. Harrison noticed the gesture and felt a sharp pain in his chest, a physical manifestation of his deep regret. He had watched Arthur and Eleanor slowly poison the family dynamic over the past decade, edging out rightful heirs and rewriting legal documents under the guise of protection and management. But protection was never their goal; total financial domination was. Victoria guided the two young girls toward the side sitting area, whispering soft instructions before taking her seat opposite Arthur. The silence in the room grew heavier, thick with unspoken accusations and the heavy scent of expensive wine and expensive perfume. Harrison kept his gaze fixed on his napkin, his fingers digging into the fabric until his knuckles turned white. He knew that the blue envelope resting inside his jacket pocket was the catalyst for tonight's grand performance. It had been delivered by courier just minutes before dinner, marked urgent and confidential. Harrison’s heart hammered against his ribs as he recalled the terrifying figures printed inside those official pages. Arthur cleared his throat, breaking the silence with a smooth, condescending tone that dripped with false warmth. "Grandfather," Arthur began, his voice dripping with oily charm. "There is no need to prolong the inevitable. We are all family here, and we all want what is best for the estate's future. It is time to face reality." Harrison looked up, his eyes locking onto his grandson's cold, calculating stare. The trap was closing fast.
