Chapter 10: The Dawn of Reckoning

The morning sun broke over the eastern horizon, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate. Inside the study, Harrison and Lily sat side by side, reviewing the final portfolio of documents they had compiled throughout the night. Every bank statement, every fraudulent loan application, and every recorded asset transfer was neatly organized in a heavy leather briefcase. The air outside was crisp and clear, devoid of the storm that had battered the coast the night before. Suddenly, the heavy oak front doors swung open with a resounding crash, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps echoing through the foyer. Eleanor burst into the study, breathless and disheveled, her silky champagne wrap stained with mud and her styled white hair falling out of place. Behind her stood Arthur and Victoria, looking exhausted, defeated, and utterly desperate. Eleanor slammed her hands down on Harrison’s desk, her eyes blazing with fury. "You planned this!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice losing its usual refined composure. "You leaked those documents to the prosecutors, didn't you? You're trying to destroy us!" Harrison remained completely calm, not even flinching at her outburst. He slowly stood up from his swivel chair, towering over Eleanor with a dignity that commanded the entire room. "No, Eleanor," Harrison replied, his voice calm, steady, and utterly chilling. "I didn't leak anything. The truth simply caught up with the house of cards you spent thirty years building." Arthur stepped forward, his face pale and contorted with desperation. "Grandfather, please," Arthur pleaded, his voice dropping into a pathetic whine. "If you turn these files over, we’ll be ruined. We’ll go to prison. We are family! You can’t do this to us." Harrison looked at his grandson, seeing not a family member, but a stranger who had traded his soul for a ledger balance. "Family?" Harrison repeated, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. "You served a grieving girl a plate of plain broccoli and shrimp while mocking her pain, Arthur. You treated human beings like garbage to fund your lavish lifestyle. You abandoned the very definition of family long before tonight."
