Chapter 14 - The Final Message

The private secure tablet glowed with a harsh, glaring white light against the dark mahogany surface of the conference table. Elena’s fingers froze over the leather strap of her portfolio as she read the incoming transmission from the federal prison medical annex.

Margaret turned slowly from the window, her keen eyes locking onto Elena’s pale expression.

“What does it say?” Margaret asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper.

Elena swallowed hard, her dark eyes reflecting the glowing screen as she read the digital dispatch out loud to the silent room.

“Inmate Julian Sterling has refused intake processing,” Elena read, her voice steady despite the shock.

“He managed to access an unauthorized encrypted terminal in the prison infirmary during a medical transfer. He has initiated a final automated override command targeting the remaining dormant contingency accounts linked to the offshore foundations.”

The prosecutor stepped forward, his face instantly turning pale with sudden panic.

“That’s impossible!” the prosecutor exclaimed, grabbing the tablet from the table.

“We swept every known server and firewall in the state! There shouldn't be any dormant contingency accounts left!”

“There’s one,” Margaret said, her voice chillingly calm as the terrible truth dawned on her.

“The private emergency reserve my late husband set up thirty years ago—an account known only to the original founders. Julian must have discovered the decryption key in the safe deposit box at our summer estate before the federal raids.”

The prosecutor frantically tapped the screen, watching the progress bar of an active, highly compressed electronic transfer rapidly climbing toward completion.

“He’s draining the last ten million dollars of the corporate reserve fund into an anonymous cryptocurrency wallet,” the prosecutor said, his voice laced with absolute horror.

“If that transfer reaches one hundred percent, the company will face immediate insolvency, and the employee pension fund will take a secondary hit that cannot be reversed!”

“Can you block it?” Elena demanded, leaning over the table with fierce determination.

“Not remotely from this terminal,” the prosecutor replied, shaking his head as the progress bar hit eighty-five percent.

“The firewall he’s using is routed through five different proxy servers in international waters. By the time we trace the signal, the money will be completely gone.”

Margaret closed her eyes for a brief second, a profound, chilling realization washing over her. Julian was willing to burn down what remained of his own life, his family name, and the entire company just to spite them and secure a stash for himself when he somehow got out.

“There is one way,” Margaret said quietly.

Everyone in the room turned to look at her in stunned silence.

“What way?” the prosecutor asked desperately.

Margaret reached into her handbag, pulling out an antique, heavy gold skeleton key that she had carried around her neck for decades.

“The physical master switch,” Margaret said, walking slowly toward the mahogany wall panel behind the executive desk.

“The physical server for the contingency account isn't in Zurich, and it isn’t in the cloud. It’s hardwired directly into the mainframe vault beneath this very building—a vault that can only be manually disconnected by cutting the primary analog power lines from the inside.”

Before anyone could stop her, Margaret inserted the gold key into the hidden wall panel, turned it with a sharp, echoing click, and pulled the heavy brass lever downward with all her remaining strength.
