Chapter 9 - The Bloodstained Blade

The cold steel of the small kitchen knife glinted sharply in the morning sunlight. Mark stared at the dark, dried stain near the hilt of the blade, his breath catching in his throat as a suffocating silence settled over the backyard.

"Where did you get this?" Mark whispered, his voice trembling as he gently pried the weapon from Lily's small, dirt-covered fingers and tossed it aside onto the grass.

Lily didn't answer right away. She kept her head bowed, her long light brown hair shielding her face from view. Her small shoulders shook with silent sobs that felt entirely too heavy for a five-year-old child.

"She found it under the floorboards in the guest room two nights ago," Elena answered from behind him, her voice eerily calm once again. "She spent four hours carving symbols into the drywall before I caught her. That is why she has to clean. That is why the boundaries must be maintained. It is the only ritual that keeps the darkness inside her contained."

Mark stood up abruptly, turning to face his wife with a look of pure outrage. "She is five years old! Children find things, children scratch walls, children act out! You have weaponized normal behavioral phases into some bizarre domestic cult ritual!"

"You didn't see her eyes, Mark," Elena said softly, stepping closer until she was standing right in front of him. For the first time, her voice cracked slightly, revealing a fractured layer of genuine exhaustion and fear beneath her stern exterior. "You travel for weeks at a time. You don't see the way she stares at the walls when she thinks no one is watching. You don't hear the things she whispers to herself in the dark."

"Because you've terrified her!" Mark shouted, his voice echoing off the wooden privacy fence. "Anyone would crack under the kind of psychological torture you've subjected her to!"

Elena shook her head slowly, clutching her mother's weathered diary tightly against her chest like a shield. "Believe whatever you want, Mark. But if you take her out of this house, if you break the routine before the equinox next week, you aren't saving her. You are unleashing something that neither of us will be able to control."

Before Mark could reply, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the air. It was the high-pitched ring of a smartphone coming from inside the kitchen—the very same phone Mark had left sitting on the wooden dining room table.

Mark glared at Elena one last time, then turned and strode quickly back toward the deck, leaving Elena and Lily standing on the grass. He pushed open the screen door, hurried across the kitchen, and grabbed the phone off the table. The screen flashed with an unknown caller ID, marked with a restricted number.

He swiped the screen and pressed the phone to his ear, his chest still heaving with agitated breaths. "Hello?"

"Mr. Carter," a deep, unfamiliar male voice spoke from the other end of the line, carrying a chillingly professional tone. "This is Detective Miller from the county sheriff's department. We received an anonymous tip regarding unusual activity at your residence. We are currently stationed at the end of your driveway, and we need you to open the front door immediately."
