Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Confrontation

Mark stood frozen in the bright kitchen, his fingers tightening around his smartphone until his knuckles turned white. The voice on the other end of the line, belonging to his daughter’s kindergarten teacher, echoed with a disturbing clarity that cut straight through the morning quiet.
"Mr. Carter, why is your daughter cleaning your house every night?"
Mark stared at the polished granite countertop, his breath catching in his throat as a cold dread pooled in his stomach. He shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and immediate defensive fury rising inside him.
"That's absurd," Mark whispered sharply into the receiver, his voice tight with controlled anger. "Lily is five years old. She sleeps through the night. What are you even talking about?"
"She fell asleep during circle time this morning," Mr. Carter replied steadily, refusing to back down. "When I gently woke her, she mumbled about finishing the living room baseboards and sorting the dark laundry before she was allowed to go to bed. These aren't normal kindergarten stories, Mr. Carter."
Mark slammed his hand against the counter, the sharp sound echoing in the silent room. "Someone is spreading lies, or she has an overly active imagination. My wife and I take care of our home."
"I am only telling you what she whispered to me with absolute terror in her eyes," the teacher said firmly. "You need to look around your house, and you need to look at your wife."
Without another word, Mark ended the call, his chest heaving with agitated breaths. He turned sharply on his heel, his dark blue button-down shirt rustling as he strode quickly down the narrow hallway away from the kitchen. He pushed open the dining room door to find his five-year-old daughter, Lily, sitting quietly at the heavy wooden table, surrounded by scattered school papers and her pink backpack.
"Sweetheart, look at me," Mark said softly, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to stay calm. "What chores are you doing at night?"
Lily looked up slowly from her papers, her long light brown hair falling over her shoulders. She paused for a long, agonizing second before speaking.
"Cleaning," she whispered. "Laundry too."
Before Mark could process the chilling confirmation, a soft footsteps sounded behind him. He spun around to see his wife, Elena, stepping into the room wearing her cream sweater and soft slippers. Her face was completely devoid of warmth, her eyes fixed on him with a dangerous, icy stare as deep emotional tension filled the quiet room.

"You're making this sound much worse than it is," Elena said coldly.
