Chapter 2 - The Soft-Spoken Defense

Elena crossed her arms over her cream sweater, her posture defensive yet chillingly composed. She looked down at Lily, who immediately shrank back into her chair, her small hands pulling the edges of her pink shirt closer to her chest.

Mark stepped between his wife and their daughter, his gaze darting from Elena's cold expression back to the frightened child. "Worse than it is?" Mark demanded, his voice rising in volume and pitch. "Elena, Mr. Carter just called from the school. He said Lily fell asleep because she was up all night doing housework. What is happening in this house while I am at work?"

"Nothing that requires your dramatic interrogation," Elena replied smoothly, stepping closer to the wooden table. She reached out and gently touched Lily's shoulder, though the girl flinched ever so slightly beneath her mother's hand. "Lily is learning responsibility. Early independence builds character, Mark. You always complained that I coddled her too much."

"Responsibility?" Mark scoffed, running a hand through his short dark hair in sheer frustration. "She is five years old! Five-year-olds play with blocks and draw poorly proportioned horses. They do not scrub floors and fold laundry in the dead of night. This isn't discipline, Elena. This is cruelty."

"Watch your tone," Elena warned, her voice dropping to a low, menacing register that made the hair on the back of Mark's neck stand up. She cast a fleeting, warning glance at Lily. "We agreed on how to run this household. If you spent less time traveling for your firm and more time paying attention to the domestic reality of our lives, you would understand why certain measures are necessary."

Mark stared at his wife, realizing with a sudden, sickening jolt that he didn't really know the woman he had married five years ago. Beneath her polished exterior, there was a rigid, unyielding darkness that he had somehow managed to ignore until this exact moment.

He knelt down beside Lily's chair, ignoring Elena's glare, and brought himself down to his daughter's eye level. "Lily, honey, did Mommy tell you to do these things?"

Lily looked between her parents, her lower lip trembling slightly. She swallowed hard, her young eyes wide with a heavy secret that children should never have to carry.

Before Lily could utter a single word, Elena clapped her hands together sharply. The sudden sound made both Mark and Lily jump.

"Enough of this theater," Elena commanded, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a knife. She grabbed Lily's school bag, hoisting it over her own shoulder with practiced ease. "Get your coat, Lily. We are going to the grocery store right now, and you and I are going to have a long talk about loyalty."
