Chapter 8 - The Transferred Curse

The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on the concrete decking of Sunset Palms, but the sudden silence that enveloped the courtyard felt ice-cold. Marcus held the freshly dropped property deed in his hands, his eyes darting frantically across the legal terminology printed on the heavy municipal paper. David stared at him in sheer terror, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps as the full weight of Arthur’s final statement began to register in his mind.

“What... what did you just say?” David whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. “What deed transfer? I never signed anything! I didn't buy the complex!”

Arthur Pendelton leaned comfortably on his carved wooden cane, a cold, calculated smirk playing on his weathered lips. He didn't look like a fugitive returning to the scene of a crime; he looked like a master chess player who had just executed a checkmate he had planned years in advance.

“You didn't have to sign it physically, David,” Arthur replied smoothly, his raspy voice cutting cleanly through the humid air. “Under the bylaws of Sunset Palms, any unit holder whose account is tied to the primary development ledger automatically assumes corporate liability if the primary director steps down. And since Evelyn fraudulently transferred the financial portfolio into your account using your forged power of attorney three years ago... congratulations, David. You are now the legal owner and sole responsible party for a collapsing apartment complex built on a sinking sinkhole.”

Evelyn let out a blood-curdling scream of pure terror, abandoning all restraint as she lunged upward from the shallow end, slamming her hands against the concrete edge of the pool. Her pink bikini top was askew, her wet blonde hair plastered to her skull, and her face twisted in a mask of absolute panic.

“You bastard!” Evelyn shrieked, spitting water toward Arthur’s polished leather shoes. “You said the liability would stay with the shell corporation! You promised me immunity! You said once the transfer went through, we would split the offshore funds and disappear!”

Arthur didn't even flinch as the spray of chlorinated water hit his cuffs. He simply glanced down at Evelyn with casual disdain.

“Panicking never suited you, Evelyn,” Arthur said coldly. “You wanted power on the property board. You wanted to feel important. Well, now you have all the importance you could ever ask for. You and your new business partner.”

Arthur turned his sharp gaze back to David, who looked as though he might collapse right onto the wet concrete.

Maya, however, did not react with shock or panic. She slowly stood up from her crouched position beside the pool edge, her long dark wet hair dripping onto the dark blue one-piece swimsuit. Her eyes remained locked onto Arthur with a terrifying, unblinking intensity. She walked slowly toward the elderly developer, her bare feet making soft, deliberate slapping sounds against the warm stone.

“You thought you could tie up all the loose ends by pinning the entire corporate liability onto an innocent accountant,” Maya said, her voice dangerously quiet, carrying a weight that made even Arthur’s smug expression falter slightly.

Arthur turned to face her, narrowing his eyes. “And what are you going to do about it, little girl? My lawyers drafted that transfer legally. The city housing authority has already logged the digital signature. Legally speaking, David owns the sinkhole, and Evelyn helped him cover it up.”

“Your lawyers drafted it using a forged municipal stamp,” Maya replied smoothly, stopping just inches away from Arthur. She reached behind her back and calmly pulled a sleek, waterproof digital recording device from the waistband of her swimsuit, pressing play with her thumb.

Instantly, the courtyard echoed with the crystal-clear audio of Arthur’s voice recorded earlier that morning, speaking directly to Evelyn: “You wanted power on the property board... you and your new business partner... we will split the offshore funds and disappear...”

Arthur’s face instantly drained of all color. He froze, his cane slipping slightly against the smooth stone as panic finally flared in his aging eyes.

Before Arthur could lunge for the device, a sudden, deafening crack echoed from beneath the concrete decking near the deep end of the pool, and the entire ground violently tilted to the left.
