Chapter 2 - The Rising Tide of Secrets

Water dripped heavily from the hem of Evelyn’s bright red resort cover-up as she planted her bare feet firmly on the wet pool floor, the pink bikini beneath clinging tightly to her frame. The chaotic splash she had created moments ago had left the surrounding lounge chairs drenched and the onlookers whispering behind their sunglasses. Yet, Evelyn paid no attention to the damp spectators or the dripping state of her clothes. Her entire world had narrowed down to a single object currently drifting across the surface of the Sunset Palms pool: the small, waterproof canvas pouch bearing the confidential municipal crest of the city housing authority.
David stood paralyzed on the concrete deck, his striped blue and white swim trunks soaked with splashed chlorine, his mouth slightly agape as he stared at the woman he had known for three years as a mild-mannered, uptight property board member.
“Evelyn, are you out of your mind?” David finally managed to spit out, his deep voice echoing slightly off the stucco walls of the apartment complex. “You jumped in with your sunglasses and your cover-up fully on! What on earth is wrong with you?”
Evelyn ignored him entirely. Her breathing was ragged, her chest heaving beneath the red fabric as she waded aggressively through the shallow end toward the skimmer basket. Her eyes were fixed on the floating canvas pouch like a hawk spotting a field mouse.
Maya, sitting undisturbed on the edge of the pool with her dark wet hair clinging to her back, did not move a muscle. A slow, cryptic smile began to form at the corner of her lips. She watched Evelyn flounder through the water, her expression devoid of the fear or anger one would expect from a stranger being harassed. Instead, Maya looked like someone who had just triggered a long-awaited trap.
“You shouldn't have done that, Evelyn,” Maya said softly, her voice cutting cleanly through the splashing sounds. “You just drew a whole lot of unwanted attention to a very private box.”
Evelyn reached out with a trembling hand, her fingers clawing desperately at the wet canvas just as it brushed against the plastic grate of the skimmer. She snatched the pouch triumphantly, clutching it to her chest as if she were shielding a beating heart. She spun around to face Maya, her blonde hair plastered against her forehead, her oversized sunglasses finally slipping off her face and sinking silently to the bottom of the pool.
“This doesn't belong to you,” Evelyn hissed, her voice vibrating with a desperate, frantic energy. “Where did you get this? Who sent you here?”
Maya slowly slid off the edge of the pool, her dark blue one-piece swimsuit absorbing the water as she stood up directly in front of Evelyn, towering over her by a few inches. Maya reached out and gently tapped the corner of the dripping canvas pouch.
“I didn't come here for the pool, Evelyn,” Maya whispered, her eyes locking onto Evelyn’s with terrifying clarity. “I came here to show the city council what you hid inside the foundation of this building three years ago.”
May you like
Evelyn gasped, stumbling backward into the water as the full weight of the threat crashed down upon her. Before she could demand another word, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the main security gate behind the pool deck.
