Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point of Sunset Palms

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete decking of the Sunset Palms apartment complex, radiating a dry, punishing heat that made the air shimmer. Evelyn, a forty-year-old resident with her blonde hair twisted neatly into a claw clip and oversized sunglasses masking her tense expression, stood planted over the water. She wore a bright red resort cover-up dress thrown loosely over a pink bikini, and her bare feet tapped a rapid, anxious rhythm against the warm stone.

Below her, sitting lazily on the wet edge of the pool with her feet submerged, was Maya, a twenty-five-year-old woman with long, dark, wet hair clinging to her back and a dark blue one-piece swimsuit. Standing nearby, looking thoroughly bewildered in his striped blue and white swim trunks, was David, a forty-five-year-old shirtless resident trying to enjoy his quiet afternoon off.

Evelyn pointed an aggressive, trembling finger straight at Maya’s face, her voice cutting sharply through the ambient hum of the neighborhood.

“Get out of the pool!” Evelyn demanded, her chest heaving as she fought to keep her composure.

David stepped half an inch forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture.

“Evelyn, take it easy, it’s just a hot Tuesday—” he began.

Evelyn snapped her head around, her sunglasses sliding slightly down the bridge of her nose, fixing him with a glare of pure indignation.

“This area is for my residents only!” she shouted at David, her voice cracking slightly under the strain of deep-seated paranoia.

Maya slowly turned her head, looking back at Evelyn with a chilling, infuriating calm that only fueled the older woman’s fury. She tilted her chin up, resting her hands behind her on the cool concrete.

“What? This is a public pool!” Maya replied, her tone completely level, dripping with casual defiance.

Evelyn lost whatever fragile grip she had left on her patience, throwing both hands up into the air and gesturing wildly at the shimmering blue water as if trying to push the entire pool away from her.

“You don't like pool! You don't own it!” Evelyn screamed, her face flushing a deep, mottled crimson.

“I live here! That means I decide who gets to use it!” Evelyn shrieked.

Before anyone could blink or utter a warning, Evelyn took a massive, chaotic step forward, leaping entirely off the concrete edge. She plunged straight into the deep end with a deafening, explosive splash that sent a wall of chlorinated water crashing over the lounge chairs. Onlookers gasped, staring in absolute horror from their umbrellas. As Evelyn bobbed back to the surface, sputtering and pushing her wet blonde hair out of her eyes, she didn't swim toward the ladder. Instead, her eyes locked onto a small, waterproof canvas pouch that had slipped out of Maya’s beach bag during the chaos—a pouch that was now slowly floating toward the skimmer, bearing the unmistakable municipal crest of the city housing authority, stamped with a confidential code that Evelyn had spent three years trying to bury.
