Chapter 5 - The Family Lineage

The damp blueprints felt heavy and unforgiving in Marcus’s hands as he stared down at the highlighted signature at the bottom of the municipal document. The courtyard of Sunset Palms was so quiet that the faint buzzing of a single cicada in a nearby palm tree sounded like a roaring engine. David stood frozen on the concrete deck, his striped swim trunks dripping water onto the stone as the horrifying reality of what Evelyn and the city officials had hidden began to sink into his mind.
“Is this... is this real?” David whispered, looking directly at Marcus, demanding an answer that neither Evelyn nor the inspector seemed eager to provide. “Are you telling me this entire apartment complex was built on an active geological fault, and the city signed off on it anyway?”
Marcus did not answer immediately. He slowly lowered the blueprints, his eyes shifting from the soaked pages to Maya, who stood beside him with an expression of cold, calculated detachment. The tension between the young investigator and the senior zoning inspector crackled in the heavy, humid air.
Evelyn let out a bitter, jagged laugh, her wet blonde hair sticking to her cheeks as she waded slightly deeper into the water, hugging her pink-bikini-clad torso against the chill.
“Ask her, David,” Evelyn spat out, pointing a trembling finger directly at Maya. “Ask the brilliant investigator where she got the original copies of these reports. Ask her who taught her how to track down buried municipal fraud so efficiently.”
David blinked, his confusion deepening into utter bewilderment. He turned his gaze from Evelyn to Maya. “What is she talking about, Maya? Who are you?”
Maya slowly uncrossed her arms, letting her hands fall to her sides. The cryptic, infuriating calm that had defined her demeanor since she first sat on the edge of the pool returned, but this time, it was laced with a chillingly personal edge. She reached into the pocket of her wet dark blue one-piece swimsuit and pulled out a small, laminated identification card, tossing it effortlessly onto the dry concrete near David’s feet.
David looked down. The card bore the official seal of the federal department of infrastructure oversight, featuring a photograph of a much younger Maya standing beside a distinguished, silver-haired man whose face was plastered across the front page of every major financial newspaper three years ago.
“My name is Maya Vance,” she said, her voice ringing out clearly across the courtyard. “And the man whose signature is signed at the bottom of those fraudulent permits is my father—the man Evelyn helped frame to cover up his own corporate crimes.”
Evelyn shrieked, splashing a wave of water toward the edge in a desperate attempt to interrupt. “He was the mastermind! He gave the orders!”
“He was a scapegoat, Evelyn,” Maya countered sharply, taking a step forward until she was towering over the edge of the pool once more, staring directly down into Evelyn’s panic-stricken eyes. “And you were his loyal little administrative cleaner. But my father didn't act alone. There was a silent partner who received a massive wire transfer the day those permits were approved.”
Maya paused, letting the silence stretch to an unbearable limit before dropping the final, devastating piece of evidence.

“And that wire transfer went straight into a bank account registered under David’s home address.”
