Chapter 9 - The Breach at the Bulkhead

The heavy steel bulkhead door buckled inward with a concussive blast of compressed air and flying concrete dust. A thick cloud of white smoke poured into the subterranean corridor, obscuring the hallway in an impenetrable haze. Through the swirling dust, heavy tactical boots crunched against the shattered remnants of the locking bolts.

“Clear the threshold! Flashbangs ready!” a raspy, robotic voice shouted from the smoke.

“Get down!” Arthur roared, diving across the concrete floor and shielding little Julian beneath his heavy wool coat as two blinding flashbang grenades sailed over their heads.

CRACK-FLASH!

The subterranean vault erupted into a blinding white glare accompanied by a deafening shockwave that rattled the ancient server racks and sent cascades of rusted iron screws raining down onto the floor.

Dr. Elena Vance screamed, pressing her hands over her ears as three corporate security operatives in full tactical gear poured through the smoking breach, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with tactical precision.

“Targets acquired! Secure the child and eliminate the adult collateral!” shouted Marcus Gable, stepping through the smoke behind the operatives. His beige suit jacket was still torn at the shoulder, his split lip caked with dried blood as he pointed a trembling finger directly at Arthur.

Arthur didn't wait. Springing up from the floor with explosive speed, he kicked the base of a towering, rusted server rack. The multi-ton monolith of 1990s computing hardware groaned, tipped forward like a falling tree, and crashed directly into the path of the advancing operatives, burying the lead guard beneath a mountain of heavy steel and magnetic tape reels.

The remaining two guards scrambled backward, their weapons swinging toward Arthur just as a small, high-pitched voice echoed across the quiet vault.

“Stop moving,” Julian said softly.

The two tactical operatives suddenly froze mid-stride. Their assault rifles dropped from their hands, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. Their eyes rolled backward until only the whites showed, and they collapsed like marionettes with their strings cut, pitching forward onto the dusty floor without a sound.

Marcus Gable stood paralyzed in the smoke-filled doorway, his face draining of all color. He stared at four-year-old Julian in absolute, unadulterated terror.

“What... what did he just do?” Marcus whispered, backing away until his spine hit the jagged edge of the broken bulkhead door.

Arthur stood up slowly, brushing concrete dust off the shoulders of his dark tailored suit. He walked toward Marcus with a deliberate, terrifying calm, his eyes locked on the corporate executive like a predator closing in on wounded prey.

“He just told your nervous system to reboot, Marcus,” Arthur said coldly, stopping two feet away from the trembling man. “And right now, I’m going to ask you the question your boss was too cowardly to answer himself.”

Arthur reached out, grabbed Marcus by the lapels of his ruined beige suit, and hoisted him off the floor with effortless strength.

“Where is my father taking the mainframe core?” Arthur hissed into Marcus’s terrified face.

Marcus let out a wet, strangled gasp, his hands clawing weakly at Arthur’s wrists.

“He... he isn't moving the core to another facility, Arthur,” Marcus choked out, blood pooling in the corner of his mouth. “He’s uploading the entire global neural network into the satellite uplink... right above the hotel rooftop where your wife is waiting.”
