Chapter 1 - The Broken Alibi

Arthur Vance stood beneath the damp concrete canopy, his heavy wool coat absorbing the morning chill as he stared down at Julian. The four-year-old boy clung to his leg in a cream-colored romper that was stained with dry juice and fear. Across the polished courtyard, Clara Vance picked herself up from the outdoor sofa, dusting off her beige pantsuit with trembling hands while Marcus Gable staggered out of the gold luggage cart.
Marcus wiped a smear of blood from his lip, his beige suit jacket torn at the shoulder. He looked at Arthur with a mixture of terror and unyielding arrogance.
“You have no idea what you’ve just done, Arthur,” Marcus hissed, his voice echoing off the glass facade of the terminal. “That boy isn’t just yours to protect anymore. The board authorized that protocol the moment the quarterly metrics showed a deviation in his cognitive growth.”
Arthur tightened his grip on Julian, feeling the small body tremble against his thigh. He stepped forward, his dark tailored suit cutting a sharp silhouette against the gray light.
“You locked a starving child inside a sealed vehicle, Marcus,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “Don't talk to me about board protocols or metrics when your own signature is on the containment transfer orders.”
Clara stepped between them, her face flushed, her eyes darting nervously toward the hovering black SUV.
“We did it for the foundation, Arthur!” Clara cried out, her voice cracking under the pressure. “You weren’t at the research symposium in Zurich. You didn’t see what the baseline data predicted if Julian’s neural synchronization kept accelerating ahead of schedule. They would have classified him as a public hazard within forty-eight hours!”
“So your solution was starvation and solitary confinement in a hotel parking lot?” Arthur asked, his gaze shifting slowly from Clara to Marcus. “Cut the corporate rhetoric. What did you really inject him with during the morning intake?”
Marcus laughed, a dry, nervous sound that died in his throat as Arthur took another slow, deliberate step toward him.

“You think the injection was ours?” Marcus whispered, his eyes widening as a black sedan pulled silently up behind the SUV. “Check the backseat floor mat of your own car right now.”
