Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass and Sanctuary

The sound of shattering tempered glass echoed like a string of firecrackers across the courtyard as Arthur smashed through the terminal’s revolving glass doors, shielding Julian with his own broad shoulders. Shards of glass rained down over his dark tailored suit, some slicing harmlessly through the heavy wool fabric, while others embedded themselves in the rubber soles of his shoes.

“Stop him!” Alistair’s voice boomed from the courtyard, sharp and laced with absolute panic. “Shoot out his legs if you have to! Do not let him reach the maintenance elevator!”

Heavy footfalls pounded against the slick terrazzo flooring inside the lobby as two corporate security guards in black tactical gear sprinted out from behind the ticketing counters, their tasers unholstered and humming with lethal electrical charges.

Arthur didn't hesitate. Holding Julian securely against his chest with his left arm, he drew a heavy brass fire extinguisher from the wall bracket with his right hand and hurled it backward without looking. The heavy metal cylinder caught the lead guard squarely in the chest, dropping him instantly with a loud groan of winded agony. The second guard fired his taser, the twin darts hissing past Arthur’s ear and embedding themselves deep into the mahogany reception desk with a bright blue flash of sparks.

Arthur sprinted toward the back of the terminal, bypassing the abandoned baggage claims and heading straight for the employees-only service corridor. The air smelled of stale coffee, industrial floor wax, and ozone.

“Daddy, you’re bleeding,” Julian whispered softly, his tiny hand reaching up to touch Arthur’s jaw, where a small cut from the shattered glass was beginning to bead with dark red blood.

“I’m fine, buddy,” Arthur grunted, his breathing heavy as he slammed his shoulder against the heavy steel service door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

The door gave way with a metallic shriek, opening into a concrete stairwell that descended steeply into the subterranean bowels of the city’s transit and utility network. Arthur plunged into the darkness, slamming the heavy fire door behind him and sliding the manual deadbolt across its heavy iron latch just as the heavy boots of pursuing guards slammed against the other side.

“Arthur! Open this door!” Marcus Gable’s voice muffled through the steel plating, sounding frantic and desperate. “You can't hide down there! The entire sublevel is mapped by the corporate neural network! Every camera, every motion sensor, every automated door lock is controlled by Director Vance!”

Arthur ignored him. He scooped Julian up higher into his arms, adjusting his grip on the boy’s cream-colored romper, which was now flecked with dust and glass splinters. He began descending the spiral concrete stairs into the damp, echoing gloom.

“Where are we going, Daddy?” Julian asked, his blue eyes reflecting the dim emergency lighting overhead.

“We’re going to find the place your grandfather is most afraid of,” Arthur replied, his voice echoing in the stairwell.

They descended three full levels below street grade before Arthur reached the heavy bulkhead door marked SECTOR 7: DECOMMISSIONED EXPERIMENTAL ARCHIVE. He pulled the titanium keycard he had stolen from Alistair’s private desk three years ago out of his pocket and pressed it against the optical scanner.

The red light flickered, turned amber, and then flashed a solid, blinding green. The massive steel seal hissed as pneumatic locks disengaged. But as the heavy door swung open, the emergency lights overhead suddenly died, plunging the entire corridor into absolute, pitch-black silence—except for the faint, rhythmic ticking sound echoing from deep within the dark vault.
