Chapter 13 - The Grid Iron Crash

The heavy black SUV surged forward like a missile across the open courtyard, its engine roaring with a deep, mechanical fury that drowned out the wailing city sirens. Arthur gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes locked on the reinforced concrete wall of the substation junction fifty yards ahead. In the passenger seat, little Julian stirred, his pale face smeared with dried blood as he blinked his heavy eyelids against the flashing green glare of the dashboard countdown.
“Hold on, buddy!” Arthur shouted over the deafening roar of the accelerating engine.
CRASH!
The heavy SUV slammed through the reinforced concrete substation wall in an explosion of flying cinder blocks, twisted rebar, and blinding white electrical arcs. The vehicle tore through three rows of humming, oil-filled transformer units, sending sparks cascading like fireworks across the interior cabin before finally plowing to a violent, bone-jarring halt against the master municipal circuit breaker housing.
Smoke billowed from under the crushed hood of the SUV, mixing with the acrid smell of burning transformer oil and ozone.
Arthur spat out a mouthful of dust, unclipped his seatbelt, and shoved his door open against the wreckage of a shattered concrete pillar. He scrambled around to the passenger side, yanked the door open, and pulled little Julian safely out into his arms. The boy was breathing, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rhythmic pulses, but his skin felt unnaturally cold to the touch.
“Daddy... we broke the wall,” Julian whispered, his voice weak but clear as he rested his head against Arthur’s shoulder.
“We broke the loop, buddy,” Arthur murmured, kissing the top of the boy’s soft, dusty hair.
He turned around, surveying the smoking wreckage of the substation. The glowing green countdown on the damaged municipal transformer screens flickered violently, stuttered, and then finally went completely dark. Across the city skyline, the flashing crimson warning signs vanished from the digital billboards, leaving the metropolis bathed in the natural, quiet gray light of an overcast morning.
Suddenly, the crunch of heavy boots echoed from the rubble behind him.
Arthur spun around, shifting Julian to his left arm while his right hand instinctively reached into his coat pocket. Emerging from the smoke of the breached substation wall was Marcus Gable. The corporate executive’s beige suit was completely ruined, covered in soot and motor oil, and his face was twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged desperation.
