Chapter 8

Arthur descended the sweeping curved staircase of the manor, his dark suit jacket buttoned high, his face an impenetrable mask of cold authority. In the grand, marble-floored foyer, Valerie Sterling stood waiting, still draped in her sparkling gold evening gown, though her hair was slightly disheveled from the rain. Flanking her were two uniformed federal marshals holding digital clipboards, their expressions entirely neutral. Mrs. Gable stood near the hallway entrance, wringing her hands in absolute panic while keeping herself positioned between the foyer and the stairs leading up to the nursery where Lily slept.
"Mr. Vance," Valerie said, her voice devoid of any pretense of warmth or shock. She didn't look like a heartbroken fiancée jilted at a gala; she looked like a corporate predator who had just cornered a wounded animal. "I'm sorry for the late intrusion, but circumstances required an immediate visit."
Arthur reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping three steps up so he towered over her by a head. He looked down at her with unblinking, lethal calm. "You brought federal marshals to my private home at three in the morning, Ms. Sterling. You have exactly thirty seconds to explain why I shouldn't have them arrest you for trespassing before I throw you out myself."
Valerie offered a thin, brittle smile, stepping forward without a hint of intimidation. "You can threaten me all you want, Arthur, but the law isn't on your side tonight. Julian may be your son, but he was also the vice president of corporate acquisitions for Vance Global Logistics. And under federal securities law, any executive who systematically loots corporate R&D funds to finance personal offshore accounts commits a felony that implicates the entire board—starting with the chairman who signed off on those audits without verifying the beneficiaries."
Arthur didn't flinch. He had anticipated corporate warfare, but not this level of preemptive betrayal. "You think you can pin Julian’s embezzlement on me? The SEC audited my books last quarter. Every penny is accounted for."
"Not the money Julian funneled through the Sterling-Vance joint venture we signed yesterday afternoon," Valerie countered, pulling a folded document from her evening bag and holding it up. "Julian signed over primary patent rights to your next-generation autonomous shipping fleet as a dowry for our engagement. Legally, those patents now belong to Sterling Industries. And if you try to freeze his assets, I will sue Vance Global into Chapter 11 bankruptcy before the sun rises."
The silence in the foyer was absolute. Mrs. Gable gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Arthur stared at Valerie, finally understanding the true depth of Julian’s treason. His son hadn't just sold his family; he had signed away the very soul of the Vance empire for a seat at the Sterling table.

"You think you won," Arthur said quietly, stepping down the final stair. "You think a signature on a corrupted contract protects you."
Before Valerie could answer, the front doors flew open behind her, and Marcus strode into the foyer holding a blinking tablet and an emergency court order signed by a federal judge.
