Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom hummed with a warm, deceptive brilliance, casting a golden halo over the sea of high-society elites. At the center of this opulent gathering stood seven-year-old Lily, her blonde hair neatly styled in half-up pigtails, framing a face illuminated by innocent anticipation. She wore a delicate pale pink dress paired with a soft cream cardigan, clutching a pristine white artificial flower in her small hands. She approached the elegant woman in the shimmering gold evening gown, smiling shyly.
"For you," Lily said softly, her voice barely carrying above the low murmur of classical string music.
Beside the woman stood Julian, a thirty-five-year-old man in a sharp black tuxedo and bow tie, his face tightening into a mask of cold panic. Before the woman in gold could reach out to accept the token, Julian’s hand lashed out in a sharp, brutal arc, violently knocking the white flower from Lily’s grasp. The artificial bloom skittered across the polished mahogany floor. The sudden impact startled the little girl, sending her stumbling backward onto the thick patterned carpet, where she collided hard with the ground. Tears welled instantly in her blue eyes, her chest heaving as she processed the cruel rejection.
"Why did you give me trash?" Julian shouted, his voice dripping with venom, desperate to distance himself from the child in front of the horrified onlookers.
The music ground to an abrupt halt. Whispers rippled through the crowd as guests turned away, whispering behind jeweled hands. Julian’s face flushed a deep crimson as he glared down at the sobbing girl, hoping to erase her existence with a single look. But before he could issue another harsh command, a shadow fell over them. Seventy-five-year-old Arthur Vance, dressed impeccably in a dark suit and blue shirt, pushed his way through the stunned crowd with terrifying speed. His silver hair caught the chandelier light as he dropped to his knees on the carpet, gathering the trembling child into his trembling arms.

"Grandpa," Lily sobbed, her small finger extending to point directly at the man in the tuxedo. "Dad told her I'm the housekeeper's daughter."
Arthur froze, the air leaving his lungs. He slowly turned his head to look at Julian, his eyes narrowing into cold, unforgiving daggers.
